How the Break-Even Revenue Calculator works
The Break-Even Revenue Calculator uses Fixed costs per period, Price per unit, and Variable cost per unit to calculate break-even units and break-even revenue. The result also shows the contribution margin, formulas, and assumptions used in the calculation.
How to use the Break-Even Revenue Calculator
- Choose a Currency symbol. The selection changes the symbol shown with monetary results, but it does not convert the values.
- Enter Fixed costs per period for the period you want to analyze.
- Enter Price per unit for one sale.
- Enter Variable cost per unit.
- Click Calculate break-even to show the units, revenue, contribution margin, formulas, and assumptions.
- Click Copy result or Download result (.txt) to save the plain-text calculation.
- Click Reset to clear the inputs and hide the result.
Break-even units and revenue formula
The calculator subtracts Variable cost per unit from Price per unit to get the contribution margin per unit. It divides Fixed costs per period by that margin, then multiplies the units by Price per unit to get break-even revenue.
Break-even units = Fixed costs / (Price per unit - Variable cost per unit)
Break-even revenue = Break-even units x Price per unit
With $10,000 in Fixed costs per period, a $50 Price per unit, and a $20 Variable cost per unit, the calculation produces:
Contribution margin per unit: $30.00
Break-even units per period: 333.33
Break-even revenue per period: $16,666.67
The result also includes the contribution margin ratio. The calculator finds it by dividing contribution margin per unit by Price per unit.
What the calculator accepts and shows
Fixed costs per period accepts zero or a positive number. Price per unit must be greater than zero. Variable cost per unit accepts zero or a positive number and must be less than Price per unit. Invalid input stops the calculation, shows an error, and keeps the result hidden.
After a valid calculation, the result shows break-even units per period, break-even revenue per period, contribution margin per unit, the formulas, and an assumptions table. Monetary values show two decimal places. Break-even units stay as a decimal and are not rounded up to a whole unit.
Currency symbol changes the displayed symbol only. The script makes no network request containing the values you enter, so the calculation stays in the browser. The calculator has no inputs for taxes, discounts, step costs, or price and variable cost changes at different volumes.
What the numbers let you compare
Use one period's fixed costs with a proposed Price per unit and Variable cost per unit. The contribution margin shows how much of each sale remains after the variable cost is removed.
Change the inputs and click Calculate break-even again to compare another set of assumptions. Copy result and Download result (.txt) provide the calculated figures as plain text.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate break-even revenue?
Break-even revenue equals break-even units multiplied by Price per unit. The calculator first divides Fixed costs per period by the contribution margin per unit.
What is the break-even units formula?
Break-even units equals Fixed costs per period divided by the difference between Price per unit and Variable cost per unit. That difference is the contribution margin per unit.
Why must variable cost be less than price?
Variable cost must be less than Price per unit so the contribution margin is positive. An equal or higher Variable cost per unit triggers a validation error.
Does the break-even calculator round units up?
No. Break-even units remain a calculated decimal value and display with up to two decimal places.
Does this calculator use live business data?
No. The calculator uses only Fixed costs per period, Price per unit, Variable cost per unit, and the selected Currency symbol. It does not fetch market prices, rates, or other external data.
