How to calculate a fence material estimate
Enter the fence run and the stock sizes you plan to use. The Fence Calculator subtracts gate openings, calculates panels and posts, then derives rails from the panel count. The result includes converted values, formulas, assumptions, and text you can copy or download.
- Enter Total fence length, then choose a value in Fence length unit.
- Enter Post spacing (on-center), Panel width (stock size), Rails per panel, and Waste / overage %, then choose units for the length fields.
- Set Number of gates and Gate width (each) when gates are part of the run.
- Click Calculate, then read the panel, post, rail, formula, and assumption values.
- Choose Copy result or Download result (.txt), or click Reset to clear the result.
How to calculate fence panels and posts
The calculator converts the length inputs to feet. It subtracts Number of gates multiplied by Gate width (each) from Total fence length, then uses that panel run for the quantity calculations. Panel count uses Panel width (stock size) and Waste / overage %. Line posts use Post spacing (on-center). Rails equal the panel count multiplied by Rails per panel.
Inputs: 100 ft fence, 8 ft spacing, 8 ft panels, 3 rails, 10% waste, 1 gate at 4 ft
Output: 14 panels, 15 posts, 42 rails, 100 ft total fence run
Panel and line-post calculations round up. Waste / overage % is applied before the panel count is rounded. It does not add separate waste to posts or rails.
Fence panel calculator inputs and units
Total fence length accepts ft, in, yd, m, or cm. Post spacing (on-center), Panel width (stock size), and Gate width (each) accept ft or m. One Gate width (each) value is used for every gate. With Number of gates set to 0, a blank Gate width (each) is treated as zero.
Total fence length must be 0.1 to 2,000 in the selected unit. Post spacing (on-center) accepts 0.5 to 20, Panel width (stock size) 0.5 to 30, Rails per panel 1 to 10, Waste / overage % 0 to 50, Number of gates 0 to 10, and Gate width (each) 1 to 20 when entered. Rails per panel and Number of gates must be whole numbers.
What the fence post spacing formula includes
Panel run = Fence length - (Gates x Gate width)Panels needed = ceil(Panel run / Panel width x (1 + Waste % / 100))Line posts = ceil(Panel run / Post spacing) + 1Total posts = Line posts + (Gates x 2)Total rails = Panels needed x Rails per panel
The calculation represents one straight fence run. It leaves out corners, curves, slopes, different gate widths, double gates, footing size, and footing depth. If total gate width is equal to or greater than Total fence length, Calculate shows an error instead of a result.
Where this fence estimate comes up
For the sample inputs, the 100 ft fence run becomes a 96 ft panel run after the 4 ft gate opening is removed. The result separates line posts from the two posts added for the gate.
Change Panel width (stock size) to see the panel and rail totals change. Set Number of gates to 0 for a run without gate openings, or set Waste / overage % to 0 for a calculation without overage.
When another construction calculator fits better
Use Construction Calculators when you need a different construction quantity, dimension, load, or water-volume calculation.
Choose Deck Calculator for deck dimensions, board size, joist spacing, and post spacing. Choose Concrete Calculator for slab or footing volume and bag count. Choose Construction Materials Calculator for another material mode, such as concrete, asphalt, gravel, lumber, or rebar.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate fence panels and posts?
Enter the fence dimensions and gate values, then click Calculate. The calculator subtracts gate openings, rounds panels and line posts up, and adds two posts for each gate.
How does the fence calculator handle gates?
It uses the same Gate width (each) for every gate, subtracts the openings from Total fence length, and adds two gate posts per gate. Equal or greater total gate width produces an error.
What does Waste / overage % change?
Waste / overage % is applied to the panel calculation before the panel count is rounded up. It does not add waste to the post or rail totals.
What units does the fence panel calculator use?
Fence length accepts ft, in, yd, m, and cm. Post spacing (on-center), Panel width (stock size), and Gate width (each) accept ft and m, with the calculation converted to feet.
Does the Fence Calculator include prices or building-code data?
No. It calculates quantities from your values and does not look up prices, suppliers, building codes, wind loads, or manufacturer specifications.
