Rebar Calculator

Enter the area to be reinforced, the bar run length, the on-center spacing, and a bar size to estimate the number of bars, total length, and weight of rebar needed. The formula, every assumption, and intermediate values are shown alongside the result.

Two-way adds a second, perpendicular layer of bars, typical for a slab mat.

Standard ASTM A615 nominal weight per foot.

Total slab or footing area to be reinforced.

Length each bar spans in the primary direction. Coverage width is derived as area / this length.

Center-to-center distance between parallel bars.

Extra for cutting waste, laps, and splices. Set to 0 to exclude.

Length rebar is sold in (commonly 20 ft in the US), used to estimate bars to purchase.

Calculate the bar count first

Start with the area to reinforce, the length each bar spans, and the spacing between bars. The Rebar Calculator uses those values with Layout and Bar size to show bars placed, total length, weight, and Stock bars to buy. One-way counts bars across the derived coverage width. Two-way adds a perpendicular set.

  1. Select One-way (single direction) or Two-way (grid, both directions) from Layout.
  2. Choose a Bar size from the list.
  3. Enter Area to reinforce and Bar run length, then choose their units.
  4. Set Spacing (on-center), Waste / lap allowance %, and Stock bar length.
  5. Click Calculate and review the result, formula, and assumptions.

Enter the dimensions and spacing

Area to reinforce accepts sq ft or sq m. Bar run length accepts ft, in, yd, m, or cm. Spacing (on-center) accepts in, ft, cm, or mm. Stock bar length accepts ft or m.

Bar run length is the distance each primary bar spans. The calculator divides area by that length to derive coverage width, then counts bars across the width. Two-way also counts bars across the bar run length.

Area to reinforce: 200 sq ft
Bar run length: 20 ft
Spacing (on-center): 12 in
Layout: One-way (single direction)
Bar size: #4
Waste / lap allowance %: 5%
Stock bar length: 20 ft

Bars placed: 11
Total rebar length needed: 231.0 ft
Rebar weight (with waste): 154.3 lb
Stock bars to buy: 12

Read the formula and stock-bar estimate

The calculator converts the selected units to square feet and feet. Primary bars use ceil(coverage width / spacing) + 1. With Two-way selected, the perpendicular count uses ceil(bar run length / spacing) + 1. It calculates each direction before adding Waste / lap allowance %.

Each Bar size has a built-in nominal weight per foot. The list shows #4 as 0.668 lb/ft. Total weight appears in pounds and kilograms. The calculator divides total length with waste by Stock bar length and rounds up to the next whole stock bar.

Check these limits before calculating

  • Area, Bar run length, Spacing (on-center), and Stock bar length must be greater than zero.
  • Waste / lap allowance % accepts 0 through 50.
  • Spacing cannot exceed the derived coverage width; equality is accepted.
  • The estimate adds the selected waste percentage. It leaves out concrete cover, hooks, dowels, chairs, edge distance, and corner bars.
  • The calculator does not select structural bar size, spacing, or cover. It provides a mathematical estimate, not certified engineering or structural advice.

The calculation runs in the browser with the values entered here. It does not retrieve live pricing or supplier data. After Calculate produces a result, Copy result places the plain-text output on the clipboard, and Download result (.txt) saves that output as a text file.

Use the result for a quantity check

A concrete estimator can enter a slab or footing area, Bar run length, Spacing (on-center), and specified Bar size to check the quantity and weight before ordering Stock bars.

For a slab mat, select One-way (single direction) or Two-way (grid, both directions) to match the chosen layout. The result lists the count for each direction when the two-way layout is selected.

Choose another construction calculator

Use Construction Calculators for several material, dimension, load, solar, or water estimates. Choose Concrete Calculator for concrete volume and bag count from slab or footing dimensions.

Choose Asphalt Calculator for asphalt tonnage from area, depth, density, and waste. Choose Construction Materials Calculator for multiple construction-material modes, including rebar.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate rebar quantity for an area?

The Rebar Calculator divides Area to reinforce by Bar run length to get coverage width, then uses ceil(width / spacing) + 1 for primary bars. Two-way (grid, both directions) adds the perpendicular bar count.

How does the Rebar Calculator calculate weight?

It multiplies total length after Waste / lap allowance % by the selected Bar size's built-in weight per foot, then shows the result in pounds and kilograms.

What does Two-way (grid, both directions) add?

Two-way adds a perpendicular set of bars, calculated with Bar run length and the selected Spacing (on-center). One-way counts only the primary direction.

Why does the Rebar Calculator reject my spacing?

Spacing is rejected when it is empty, zero, negative, or greater than the derived coverage width. The calculator needs a positive numeric value within the selected unit.

Can I copy or download a rebar calculator result?

Yes. After Calculate produces a result, Copy result copies the plain-text output and Download result (.txt) saves it as a text file.
