Enter the roof measurements
The Roofing Calculator uses a rectangular footprint, a pitch, a waste percentage, and the coverage printed for the material. Enter the measurements, then inspect the converted values, formula, assumptions, and intermediate results in the result section.
- Enter
Roof length (footprint)andRoof width (footprint)as horizontal dimensions. Chooseftormfor each field. - Enter
Roof pitch (X/12). Use0for a flat roof. The field accepts values through24. - Enter
Waste allowance (%), using a value from0through50. - Enter Material coverage (per bundle/unit) using your product's rate. The units are
sq ftandm². - Select
Calculate. Blank, non-numeric, below-range, and above-range entries show an error and hide the result. - Select
Resetto restore40 ft,30 ft,6/12,10%, and33.3 sq ft. Reset also hides the result.
How the area and material estimate are calculated
Length and width are converted to feet, and material coverage is converted to square feet. The script applies the pitch multiplier, adds the waste allowance, divides the adjusted area by 100 for roofing squares, and divides it by coverage for bundles or units. The bundle or unit count is rounded up.
Roof length: 40 ft
Roof width: 30 ft
Roof pitch: 6/12
Waste allowance: 10%
Material coverage: 33.3 sq ft
Roof surface area (no waste): 1,341.6 sq ft
Area with waste allowance: 1,475.8 sq ft
Roofing squares needed: 14.76
Bundles/units needed: 45
Limits and assumptions in the calculation
Enter the horizontal footprint dimensions, not a measured sloped length or area. The calculation uses one rectangular footprint and applies the pitch multiplier to that area.
Footprint area = Length x WidthRoof surface area = Footprint area x sqrt(Pitch^2 + 12^2) / 12Area with waste = Roof surface area x (1 + Waste% / 100)Squares needed = Area with waste / 100Bundles/units needed = ceil(Area with waste / Coverage per bundle)
- Roof length and width: feet or meters, selected independently.
- Roof pitch: an X/12 rise-to-run ratio.
- Waste allowance: a percentage.
- Material coverage: square feet or square meters, displayed as
sq ftorm².
Length, width, and coverage accept 0.1 to 1000. Pitch accepts 0 to 24, and waste accepts 0 to 50. Hips, valleys, dormers, openings, underlayment, flashing, fasteners, prices, and building-code requirements are outside this calculation.

Use the result for a material estimate
For a plan with a rectangular footprint, enter the plan dimensions, pitch, waste allowance, and the coverage shown on the material packaging. The result lists the converted dimensions, adjusted area, roofing squares, and whole bundles or units.
For metric measurements, select m for each footprint dimension and the square-meter coverage unit. The calculation converts those entries to feet and square feet before applying the formulas.
Choose another construction calculator
See Construction Calculators for other material and measurement tools. Use Roof Pitch Calculator when you need pitch, angle, or rafter length from rise and run. Use Construction Materials Calculator for another material or dimension mode, including concrete, asphalt, drywall, lumber, stairs, or roofing.
Frequently asked questions
What inputs does a roofing calculator need?
It needs Roof length (footprint), Roof width (footprint), Roof pitch (X/12), Waste allowance (%), and Material coverage (per bundle/unit). Length and width can use feet or meters, while coverage can use square feet or square meters.
How do I calculate roof area with pitch?
Multiply the footprint area by sqrt(Pitch^2 + 12^2) / 12. The Roofing Calculator applies that pitch multiplier to the entered length and width, then applies the waste allowance.
How many roofing squares and bundles do I need?
Roofing squares equal the waste-adjusted area divided by 100. Bundles or units equal that area divided by your entered coverage rate, rounded up to the next whole unit.
Can I use meters in the roofing calculator?
Yes. Choose m for either footprint dimension and use square meters for material coverage. The result converts those values to square feet for the calculation.
