What the APR calculator includes
Upfront fees reduce the amount received while the scheduled payment is sized from the full loan amount. The result shows the effective APR, payment per period, total finance charge, formula, assumptions, and intermediate values used for that calculation.
How to enter the loan terms
- Enter the borrowed amount in Loan amount ($).
- Enter the quoted rate in Nominal (stated) annual rate (%).
- Enter points, origination charges, or other deductions in Upfront fees ($, optional). Leave it blank for $0.
- Enter the term, then choose Years or Months under Term unit.
- Choose a frequency under Payment schedule and choose End of period (arrears) or Beginning of period (advance) under Payment timing.
- Select Calculate and review the result and its assumptions.
How schedule and timing affect the calculation
Term unit accepts Years or Months. Payment schedule has Monthly (12/year), Bi-weekly (26/year), Weekly (52/year), Quarterly (4/year), and Annually (1/year). Payment timing places each payment at the end or beginning of its period.
The term and schedule must produce 1 to 4,800 payment periods. The calculator rounds that count to a whole number, so a fractional term can change the schedule. Nominal (stated) annual rate (%) accepts 0% through 100%. Upfront fees ($, optional) must be less than Loan amount ($).
What the APR result shows
The calculator first sizes the payment from Nominal (stated) annual rate (%) and Loan amount ($). It then solves for the periodic rate that discounts those payments to the amount received after Upfront fees ($, optional), and multiplies that rate by the periods per year in Payment schedule.
Input: $20,000 loan, 6.5% rate, $500 fees, 5 Years, Monthly (12/year), End of period (arrears)
Output: Effective APR 7.563%
Payment per period $391.32
Net amount financed $19,500.00
Total finance charge $3,979.38
Beginning-of-period (advance) payments use a timing adjustment in both formulas. With $0 in Upfront fees ($, optional), the APR equals Nominal (stated) annual rate (%) because the amount received equals Loan amount ($).
What the APR calculator leaves out
The controls do not model rate changes, odd first-period dates, per-diem interest, escrow, insurance, prepayment, or irregular payment changes. The calculation uses evenly spaced payments at the selected frequency and the values entered in the controls.
The result includes the formula, assumptions, net amount financed, solved periodic rate, and intermediate values. Select Copy result for plain text or Download result (.txt) for a text file. The script does not fetch lender records, credit data, or live rates, so the calculation uses the values entered in the browser.
How to compare loan offers
Run the same values in Loan amount ($), Nominal (stated) annual rate (%), Loan term, Payment schedule, and Payment timing with different amounts in Upfront fees ($, optional). The result shows how the amount received changes the APR and total finance charge.
For a record of one run, select Copy result or Download result (.txt). The saved text includes the entered terms, formulas, solved rate, payment, and finance charge.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate APR with upfront fees?
Enter values in Loan amount ($), Nominal (stated) annual rate (%), Upfront fees ($, optional), Loan term, Payment schedule, and Payment timing, then select Calculate. The calculator discounts the scheduled payments to the loan amount after fees and annualizes the solved periodic rate.
Does payment frequency change the APR calculation?
Yes. The Monthly (12/year), Bi-weekly (26/year), Weekly (52/year), Quarterly (4/year), and Annually (1/year) options use different periods per year, so the payment and annualized periodic rate change with the selected Payment schedule.
Is APR the same as the stated rate when fees are zero?
Yes. When the Upfront fees ($, optional) field is blank or contains $0, the amount financed equals Loan amount ($), so the calculator returns Nominal (stated) annual rate (%) as the APR under the selected Payment schedule.
Does the APR Calculator use lender or credit data?
No. It uses only the values entered in its controls and does not fetch lender records, credit data, or live rates.
