Fraction Calculator

Simplify a fraction or mixed number to lowest terms, or add, subtract, multiply, and divide a chain of fractions and mixed numbers. Every mode shows the exact simplified fraction, a mixed number, a decimal equivalent, and every calculation step.

Enter a fraction (18/24), mixed number (2 4/6), decimal (2.5), or whole number. A leading minus or plus sign is allowed.

How to use the Fraction Calculator

Enter one value under Fraction or mixed number, or switch to Fraction arithmetic for a chain of terms. The result shows Simplified fraction, Mixed number, Decimal, and the calculation steps. Use Copy result or Download result (.txt) after the calculation.

  1. Choose Simplify a fraction or Fraction arithmetic.
  2. Enter a value in Fraction or mixed number. In arithmetic mode, use Add another term and choose Add, Subtract, Multiply, or Divide.
  3. Click Calculate to see the exact result and calculation steps.
  4. Use Copy result or Download result (.txt) to save the plain-text output.

How to simplify fractions to lowest terms

Choose Simplify a fraction, enter a value in Fraction or mixed number, and click Calculate. The calculator keeps the value as an exact fraction, finds the greatest common divisor, and shows the division step when the value can be reduced. If the GCD is 1, the steps say that the value is already in lowest terms.

Input: 18/24
GCD: 6
Simplified fraction: 3/4
Mixed number: 3/4
Decimal: 0.75

Whole numbers, decimals such as 2.5, fractions such as 3/4, and mixed numbers such as 1 3/4 are accepted. You can add a leading plus or minus sign.

How fraction arithmetic is evaluated

Choose Fraction arithmetic and fill the First term and Term 2 fields. Use Add another term for more rows, then choose an operation before each added term. The calculator applies each operation to the running result in entry order, so it evaluates the chain left to right.

Input: 1/2 + 1/3 - 1/6
After step 1: 5/6
After step 2: 2/3
Exact result: 2/3

Each running result is reduced to lowest terms. The Steps list records each term, the arithmetic used, and the running result. The result area also shows Mixed number and Decimal.

Fraction calculator limits and errors

Fraction arithmetic allows up to eight terms. The calculator rejects a zero denominator, division by zero, blank values, and text outside its supported formats. A decimal needs digits on both sides of the point, such as 2.5; an input such as .5 is rejected.

Repeating decimal values can show repeating digits in parentheses. Other decimal displays can be truncated and followed by an ellipsis, while the fraction stays exact. The page parses and calculates entered values in the browser, and its calculation code makes no request with those values.

Examples with Fraction Calculator

To check written work, enter 18/24 under Simplify a fraction and inspect the GCD step beside the decimal equivalent.

To combine quantities, enter mixed numbers such as 1 3/4 and 3/4 in Fraction arithmetic. Add rows for the remaining terms, then save the exact result with Copy result or Download result (.txt).

For a worked chain, enter 1/2 + 1/3 - 1/6 as separate terms and read each running result in Steps.

When another math calculator fits

Use the Fraction and Ratio Calculator when the task involves simplifying ratios or solving direct or inverse proportions. Use the Algebra Calculator for equations with variables, including linear, quadratic, and small systems of equations. Frequently asked questions

How do I use a fraction calculator to simplify 18/24?

Choose Simplify a fraction, enter 18/24 in Fraction or mixed number, and click Calculate. The result is 3/4, with the GCD and reduction step shown.

What number formats can I enter in Fraction Calculator?

You can enter a whole number, a decimal such as 2.5, a fraction such as 3/4, or a mixed number such as 1 3/4. A leading plus or minus sign is also supported.

Does Fraction Calculator round the fraction result?

The fraction result stays exact and is reduced to lowest terms. The decimal display can use repeating notation or truncation with an ellipsis.

Can I add more than two fractions together?

Yes, Fraction arithmetic supports up to eight terms. The selected operations are applied left to right, and each running result is shown in lowest terms.
