How to use the Linear Equation Calculator
Start in the field labeled Linear equation. Enter one equation with the variable x, then inspect the algebra that leads to the answer. The calculator reduces both sides to ax + b = 0, uses x = -b / a, and keeps a fractional result in reduced form.
- Enter an equation in the field labeled Linear equation.
- Click Solve, or press Enter while the field is active.
- Read the Result section and its Steps list.
- Choose Copy result or Download result (.txt) to save the displayed text.
- Click Reset to clear the input and hide the result.
How to solve a linear equation
Type a complete equation, such as 2x + 3 = 7. The calculator moves all terms to one side, combines like terms, and applies the governing formula to the resulting coefficient and constant.
2x + 3 = 7
Combined form: 2x - 4 = 0
x = 2
Fractions stay reduced. For 3x + 1 = 0, the result is x = -1/3, with -0.333333 on the decimal line.
What can you type into a linear equation solver?
The parser accepts numbers, the variable x, the operators + - * / ^, and parentheses. It reads implicit multiplication, so 2x and 3(x + 1) work without an asterisk. Enter fractions as division, such as 1/2 x or x/3, and enter decimals such as 0.5x.
An exponent after ^ must be a non-negative whole number no higher than 12. The finished equation still has to be degree 1. Include one = with an expression on each side.
When a linear equation has no single answer
Two outcomes do not produce one numeric value. If the combined equation is 0x + 0 = 0, every value of x works and Result says "Infinitely many solutions." If a nonzero constant remains equal to zero, Result says "No solution."
Limits of the equation calculator
The input is limited to 200 characters. The calculator rejects an expression with x in a denominator, division by zero, unsupported symbols, malformed syntax, unbalanced parentheses, or a missing or repeated equals sign. It also rejects equations with degree 2 or higher, so it does not solve quadratics, inequalities, or systems of equations.
The calculation script parses and calculates the equation in the browser. It has no request that uploads the entered equation.
What the result text contains
The Result section shows the solution or status and lists each algebra line under Steps. For a single solution, the displayed values include the reduced fraction and its decimal form when the answer is non-integer.
Copy result and Download result (.txt) use the generated plain-text output. That output includes the entered equation, the solution or status, and the steps. Reset clears the equation and hides the result.
Choose the right math calculator
Use Math Calculators for another category such as fractions, geometry, sequences, or matrices. Choose the Algebra Calculator for quadratic equations or small systems of linear equations. For simultaneous equations, use the Systems of Equations Calculator, which accepts two or more equations at once.
Frequently asked questions
How do I solve a one-variable linear equation?
Enter the complete equation in Linear equation and click Solve. Result combines both sides into ax + b = 0, applies x = -b / a, and lists the intermediate lines under Steps.
Can I solve a linear equation with fractions?
Yes. Enter a fraction as division, such as 1/2 x or x/3. A non-whole solution appears as a reduced fraction with a decimal line.
Why does my equation show no solution?
It shows "No solution" when the variable terms cancel and a nonzero constant remains equal to zero. An equation that reduces to 0 = 0 shows "Infinitely many solutions."
Can this linear equation calculator solve x squared?
No. An equation whose finished form has degree 2 or higher is rejected, and the error reports the degree found. Use the Algebra Calculator for quadratic equations.
