How to use the sphere volume calculator
Enter a positive Radius or Diameter, choose a Unit, and click Calculate. The Result shows Volume, Surface area, Radius, and Diameter, followed by Formula & steps. Copy result puts the prepared text in the clipboard when access is available; Download result (.txt) saves the same result and steps as a text file.
Calculate sphere volume from a radius or diameter
- Choose Radius or Diameter under Input type.
- Enter a positive decimal in the Radius or Diameter field.
- Select a length under Unit.
- Click Calculate.
- Review Result and Formula & steps. Use Copy result or Download result (.txt) for a text copy. Reset returns Input type to Radius, clears the value, hides the result, and restores Meters (m).
Sphere volume formula and surface area
For a radius r, volume uses V = (4/3) * pi * r^3. Surface area uses A = 4 * pi * r^2. With Diameter selected, the calculator first applies r = d / 2 and then uses both formulas.
For example, enter Radius 3 and choose Meters (m):
Radius: 3 m
Volume: 113.097336 m^3
Surface area: 113.097336 m^2
What Input type and Unit change
Input type switches between Radius and Diameter. Radius is the distance from the sphere's center to its surface. Diameter is the straight-line distance across the sphere through its center. Unit accepts Millimeters (mm), Centimeters (cm), Meters (m), Kilometers (km), Inches (in), Feet (ft), Yards (yd), and Miles (mi).
The calculation first converts the selected length to meters, then works in square meters and cubic meters. The displayed result returns to the selected Unit. Surface area uses the squared unit, and volume uses the cubed unit. A diameter of 10 cm becomes a radius of 5 cm before calculation.
Why a sphere volume input is rejected
Enter a positive number in regular decimal notation. Blank input, zero, negative values, letters, malformed decimals, and scientific notation such as 1e3 are rejected. Values above 1e12 are rejected too. Changing an input hides the previous Result, so click Calculate again after an edit.
The result and steps use formatted values. If Copy result cannot access the clipboard, the page shows the text so you can select and copy it manually. Download result (.txt) saves the prepared result and steps as a text file.
What the result includes
- Result includes both Radius and Diameter, even when you enter only one of them.
- Volume uses the cubed selected unit, and Surface area uses the squared selected unit.
- Formula & steps shows the diameter-to-radius conversion and unit conversions when they apply.
Choosing a calculator for a different shape
For another shape, start with Math Calculators for Equations, Geometry & More. A solid with radius and height fits Cylinder Volume Calculator, which calculates volume plus total, lateral, and base areas. A right circular cone fits Cone Volume Calculator. For a flat circle, use Circle Area Calculator for area, radius, diameter, and circumference.
The page calculates the entered dimensions in the browser and does not send those values in a network request. The formulas assume a perfect, solid sphere and treat Radius or Diameter as exact. Wall thickness, material, tolerances, and measurement error are outside the calculation.
Frequently asked questions
What is the sphere volume formula?
Use V = (4/3) * pi * r^3, where r is the radius.
How do I calculate sphere volume from diameter?
Choose Diameter under Input type, enter the value, and click Calculate. The calculator applies r = d / 2 before finding volume and surface area.
How do I calculate sphere surface area?
Use A = 4 * pi * r^2. Enter Radius or Diameter, choose Unit, and Result shows surface area in the squared unit.
What units does the sphere volume calculator support?
Unit supports Millimeters (mm), Centimeters (cm), Meters (m), Kilometers (km), Inches (in), Feet (ft), Yards (yd), and Miles (mi). Volume uses the cubed unit, and surface area uses the squared unit.
Why is my sphere volume input rejected?
The value must be positive, use regular decimal notation, and be no greater than 1e12. Blank, zero, negative, malformed, and scientific-notation values are rejected.
