How to calculate percent yield
Enter the amount you obtained in Actual yield and the stoichiometric maximum in Theoretical yield. The calculator checks the two Unit selections, converts compatible mass values to the same basis, and then shows the formula, supplied values, and percentage.
How to use the Percent Yield Calculator
- Enter the amount obtained in Actual yield and choose its Unit.
- Enter the maximum predicted amount in Theoretical yield and choose its Unit.
- Use
mg,g, orkgfor both fields, or choose Moles (mol) for both. - Click Calculate to show Percent yield, the formula, the supplied values, and the final calculation.
- After the result appears, click Copy result or Download result (.txt). Click Reset to clear both fields and return both units to grams.
Percent yield formula and supported units
The calculation is % Yield = (Actual yield / Theoretical yield) × 100. The fields accept Milligrams (mg), Grams (g), Kilograms (kg), and Moles (mol). Choose any two mass units together, or choose Moles (mol) for both fields.
Actual yield: 8.5 g
Theoretical yield: 10 g
Percent yield: 85%
Mass values are converted to a shared mass basis before the ratio is calculated. A mass value and a mole value cannot be compared because the calculator has no molar mass for that conversion.
The arithmetic runs locally in your browser. The calculator script does not send the values entered in these fields over the network.
Calculate percent yield from actual vs. theoretical yield
Both entries must be positive numbers. Empty fields, invalid numeric text, scientific notation, and comma-formatted values produce an error and hide the result. Each value must be no greater than 1e12.
If Actual yield is larger than Theoretical yield, the displayed percentage is above 100%. The calculator keeps that value without capping or flagging it. The result panel includes plain-text output for Copy result and Download result (.txt).
Where percent yield calculations come up
For a reaction worksheet, enter the product collected as Actual yield and the stoichiometric maximum as Theoretical yield. The displayed percentage can then be transferred to the worksheet.
A batch record can use grams, milligrams, kilograms, or moles when both entries stay in the same unit family. The calculator converts mass units before dividing.
Copy result places the formula, values, and percentage in the clipboard when copying succeeds. Download result (.txt) saves the same plain-text result as a text file.
When another science calculator fits better
Use Science Calculators for a different physics, chemistry, electrical, optics, wave, fluid, gas, or radioactive-decay calculation. Choose Dilution Calculator when you need to solve for one missing value in a stock-to-target dilution using C1V1 = C2V2.
Choose Molar Mass Calculator when you need molar mass from a chemical formula. Choose Chemistry Calculator for stoichiometry, limiting reagent, solution preparation, or another chemistry calculation before the percent-yield step.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate percent yield?
Calculate percent yield by dividing Actual yield by Theoretical yield and multiplying by 100. Enter both positive values, choose compatible units, and click Calculate.
What is the percent yield formula?
The percent yield formula is (Actual yield / Theoretical yield) × 100. The calculator shows that formula alongside the values you supplied and the final percentage.
Can percent yield be over 100%?
Yes, percent yield can be over 100% when Actual yield exceeds Theoretical yield. This calculator reports the computed value without capping or flagging it.
Can I use mg and g together for percent yield?
Yes, mg and g can be used together because both are mass units. A mass unit paired with mol is rejected because the calculator does not convert mass to moles.
Does this calculator calculate theoretical yield?
This calculator requires you to enter Theoretical yield. It does not balance an equation, find a limiting reagent, look up molar mass, or derive the theoretical amount from a reaction.
