How to calculate pressure from force and area
Enter the force and the area it acts on, then select the unit shown beside each value. The calculator converts force to newtons and area to square meters before applying P = F / A. It shows the pressure in pascals, kilopascals, bar, atmospheres, psi, mmHg, and torr.
- Enter the force in Force (F).
- Select its unit in Force unit.
- Enter the surface area in Area (A), then select Area unit.
- Click Calculate to show the pressure and formula steps.
- After the result appears, select Copy result, Download result (.txt), or Reset.
Pressure calculator formula and example
The selected force is converted to newtons first. The selected area is converted to square meters, then the calculator divides the two values. Pascals are the base result; the other displayed units are calculated from that pressure.
Force (F): 100
Force unit: Newtons (N)
Area (A): 2
Area unit: Square meters (m²)
Pressure: 50 Pa
For this example, P = 100 N / 2 m² = 50 Pa. The formula steps also show any unit conversion needed before the division. This calculation covers direct force-over-area pressure; it does not model fluid depth, temperature effects, atmospheric pressure, or additional pressure sources.
Pressure calculator inputs and units
Both fields accept decimal-number syntax. The calculator rejects 1e3, 1,000, blank values, and raw inputs above 1e12 in absolute value.
- Force may be zero or positive. Force unit includes Newtons (N), Kilonewtons (kN), Pound-force (lbf), Kilogram-force (kgf), and Dynes.
- Area must be greater than zero. The available choices are Square meters (m²), Square centimeters (cm²), Square millimeters (mm²), Square feet (ft²), and Square inches (in²).
- A negative force, zero area, an empty field, or invalid number syntax stops the calculation and displays an error.
Where pressure from force and area comes up
A mechanics exercise can be checked by entering the known force and the area of the surface carrying it. The formula steps give the intermediate values used in the division.
For a load estimate, select Newtons (N), Kilonewtons (kN), or Pound-force (lbf) in Force unit. The result then appears in pascals, psi, bar, and the other output units.
A lab note can record force in Dynes or area in square centimeters. The selectors convert those entries before the pressure calculation, and the resulting text can be copied or downloaded.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate pressure from force and area?
Enter Force (F) and Area (A), select Force unit and Area unit, then click Calculate. The calculator converts both values to base units before applying P = F / A.
What force and area units can I use?
You can enter force in Newtons (N), Kilonewtons (kN), Pound-force (lbf), Kilogram-force (kgf), or Dynes, and area in Square meters (m²), Square centimeters (cm²), Square millimeters (mm²), Square feet (ft²), or Square inches (in²).
Can pressure be calculated with zero force?
Yes. Zero force produces zero pressure when the area is positive. Area cannot be zero or negative, and force cannot be negative.
Why does the pressure calculator reject my number?
The calculator accepts decimal-number syntax only. It rejects blank values, exponent notation, comma-formatted numbers, negative force, non-positive area, and raw values above 1e12 in absolute value.
Does this pressure calculation stay in my browser?
Yes. The calculator processes the entered force and area locally in the browser. The calculation script does not send those values for calculation.
