How to calculate wavelength, frequency, or wave speed
Enter two known values, choose their units, and select the quantity to solve for. The calculator converts speed to m/s, frequency to Hz, and wavelength to m before applying the wave equation. It then shows the supplied values, conversions, formula step, result, and text you can copy or download.
How to use the wavelength calculator
- Choose Solve for wavelength, Solve for frequency, or Solve for wave speed.
- Enter the other two values in Wave speed (v), Frequency (f), or Wavelength (λ), then choose the matching unit for each value.
- For the fixed speed of light value, choose Speed of light in vacuum (c). The preset uses
299792458 m/s. - Click Calculate to show Result and Formula & steps.
- After the result appears, click Copy result or Download result (.txt). Click Reset to clear the current calculation.
Calculate wavelength from wave speed and frequency
Each solve mode leaves the two known-value fields visible. For wavelength, enter Wave speed (v) and Frequency (f), then use λ = v / f. For frequency, use f = v / λ. For wave speed, use v = f × λ.
Wave speed (v): 343 m/s
Frequency (f): 500 Hz
Solve for: wavelength
Output: wavelength = 0.686 m
The result panel reports Wavelength in m, Frequency in Hz, and Wave speed in m/s. Formula & steps lists each supplied value, any unit conversion, and the division or multiplication used.
Wave equation units and conversions
Select the unit that matches each entered value:
- Wave speed: Meters/second (m/s), Kilometers/second (km/s), Kilometers/hour (km/h), Miles/hour (mph), Feet/second (ft/s), or Speed of light in vacuum (c).
- Frequency: Hertz (Hz), Kilohertz (kHz), Megahertz (MHz), Gigahertz (GHz), or Terahertz (THz).
- Wavelength: Kilometers (km), Meters (m), Centimeters (cm), Millimeters (mm), Micrometers (µm), or Nanometers (nm).
Before calculating, the script converts speed to m/s, frequency to Hz, and wavelength to m. The Formula & steps section keeps the selected input units in the supplied-value lines, while the result statistics use the converted units.
What inputs does the wavelength calculator reject?
Every entered value must be a finite number greater than zero. Empty fields, invalid text, zero, negative values, and numbers above 1e30 produce an error. Scientific notation such as 5e14 is accepted. When solving by division, a converted frequency or wavelength below 1e-30 is too small to calculate. Non-finite results are also rejected.
The wave equation uses the speed you provide. The page does not identify the wave type, infer a propagation speed, or model medium effects, dispersion, or refraction. Enter the relevant speed, or choose Speed of light in vacuum (c) for the built-in constant.
Examples with the wavelength calculator
- Enter 343 m/s and 500 Hz, choose Solve for wavelength, and check the displayed result of 0.686 m.
- For a frequency in MHz and wavelength in nanometers, select the matching unit menus. The calculation converts both values before applying the formula.
- For an electromagnetic-wave calculation, choose Speed of light in vacuum (c), enter a frequency, and review the wavelength in meters.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate wavelength from frequency and wave speed?
Enter Wave speed (v) and Frequency (f), choose Solve for wavelength, and click Calculate. The calculator applies λ = v / f after converting the inputs.
What units can I use for wavelength and frequency?
You can enter wavelength in km, m, cm, mm, µm, or nm, and frequency in Hz, kHz, MHz, GHz, or THz. Wave speed also accepts m/s, km/s, km/h, mph, ft/s, or Speed of light in vacuum (c).
Why does the wavelength calculator reject my input?
The input must be a finite number greater than zero and no larger than 1e30. Empty fields, invalid text, zero, negative values, and division inputs below 1e-30 are rejected.
Are my wavelength calculator values sent anywhere?
The calculator processes entered values in your browser and builds the result there. Its calculation script does not send those values in a request or form.
