How to standardize dates in your data
Start with CSV or TXT data that has a header row and at least one data row. Date Format Standardizer reads the column you select, writes the chosen date format, and puts ambiguous or unparseable values in a separate review table.
- Paste CSV or TXT data, or use Drop a CSV or TXT file here and browse files. Include a header row and at least one data row.
- Select Column containing dates after the headers appear.
- Choose Output format, then set Ambiguous numeric dates (e.g. 03/04/2024) and Write normalized values.
- Check Standardized records and Flagged - needs review, then use the matching Export CSV button.
How date format standardization handles ambiguous dates
Date Format Standardizer recognizes YYYY-MM-DD, YYYY/MM/DD, compact YYYYMMDD, numeric dates with slash or dash separators, Month D, YYYY, and D Month YYYY. A value such as 03/04/2024 could mean March 4 or April 3. Flag for review (don't guess) sends it to Flagged - needs review; the other two options apply a chosen convention.

A day above 12 identifies the order. Blank values, invalid calendar dates, and unmatched text go to review. An ISO-like value with a time suffix keeps its date and drops the time. Two-digit years map to 2000-2068 or 1969-1999.
Choose the date output and column write mode
Output format writes ISO 8601 (YYYY-MM-DD), US style (MM/DD/YYYY), EU style (DD/MM/YYYY), or Long form (Month D, YYYY). Each standardized row also shows Detected format.
Write normalized values controls the output column. Add normalized column (keep original) appends normalized_date. Overwrite selected column replaces the selected date cells. Flagged rows stay out of Standardized records.
What Date Format Standardizer leaves for review
Parsing checks whether each date is a real calendar date. It does not check future dates, weekends, holidays, or a business date range. The flagged export includes row, original_data, value, and reason; the standardized export includes detected_format.
CSV parsing keeps quoted commas, escaped double quotes, and line breaks inside quoted fields together. Uploaded CSV and TXT files and pasted data use these comma-separated rules.
Where date format standardization comes up
For a signup export with mixed date text, select signup_date, choose ISO 8601 (YYYY-MM-DD), and export the standardized rows.
When numeric conventions differ across sources, leave Ambiguous numeric dates (e.g. 03/04/2024) on Flag for review (don't guess), then inspect the flagged rows.
Choose Add normalized column (keep original) when the source date and normalized_date need to remain side by side.
When another dataset clean-up tool fits better
Dataset Clean Tools covers related cleanup tasks. Use Data Cleaner for format detection and shared cleanup across CSV, TSV, Excel, JSON, JSONL, XML, or YAML. Use Number & Currency Normalizer for numeric or currency columns, or Normalize Null Values for missing-value markers.
Frequently asked questions
How do I standardize dates in a CSV?
Paste or upload a CSV with headers and at least one data row. Select Column containing dates and choose the output and ambiguity settings. Results appear in Standardized records and Flagged - needs review.
Why was 03/04/2024 flagged?
Both MM/DD/YYYY and DD/MM/YYYY are plausible. Choose Assume MM/DD/YYYY (US) or Assume DD/MM/YYYY (international) to resolve it during the run.
What date formats can this tool standardize?
It recognizes ISO 8601, YYYY/MM/DD, YYYYMMDD, numeric dates with slash or dash separators, Month D, YYYY, and D Month YYYY. Unparseable values go to Flagged - needs review.
Can I keep the original date column?
Choose Add normalized column (keep original) to append normalized_date, or choose Overwrite selected column to replace the selected date cells.
Does Date Format Standardizer upload my data?
Parsing, formatting, and CSV export run in your browser. The page makes no request that sends your data to a processing endpoint.
