Transpose Table

Paste or upload tabular data and swap its rows and columns - with control over header treatment, row-label preservation, padding for uneven rows, and blank-cell display - then preview and export the result.

Drop a CSV, TSV, or spreadsheet file here

or

CSV, TSV, TXT, XLSX, XLS

How to transpose a table

Paste comma- or tab-separated rows, or load a CSV, TSV, TXT, XLSX, or XLS file. Transpose Table puts each original column into a new row, then shows the result before you export it. You can make the transposed first row the preview header, fill short rows, and choose text for blank cells.

The page reads pasted text and selected files in the browser. It does not send the table data in an upload request. An XLSX or XLS file uses its first worksheet; CSV, TSV, and TXT files are read as delimited text.

Steps to swap rows and columns

  1. Paste data into Paste CSV/TSV data below, or drop a CSV, TSV, TXT, XLSX, or XLS file onto the page and select browse files.
  2. Set First column is row labels when the transposed first row should be the preview header. First row is a header does not change the result.
  3. Type a value in Pad short/ragged rows with for missing cells, or leave the field blank.
  4. Type replacement text in Blank cell display when blank cells should show a value.
  5. Check Transposed table preview, then select Export CSV or Export Spreadsheet.

Transpose CSV data with headers

The operation changes the table shape while keeping the cell values in their transposed positions. For example:

name,age
Ada,36

name,Ada
age,36

The first row becomes the first column, and the first column becomes the first row. First column is row labels makes that new first row the header in the preview. First row is a header does not change the transposed values, preview, or exports. The export keeps all transposed values in their original order.

Handle ragged rows and blank cells

The widest remaining source row sets the width. Before the swap, shorter rows receive the Pad short/ragged rows with value, and the preview reports the count under Ragged source rows padded. A source row with one empty field is dropped; a row with several empty fields stays in the data.

Blank cell display replaces values whose trimmed text is empty in the preview, CSV export, and spreadsheet export. A non-empty padding value stays as entered, so Blank cell display does not replace it.

Read and export the table

For pasted text and text files, the tool compares commas and tabs on the first line. It selects tabs only when that line contains more tabs than commas; otherwise it uses commas. Quoted CSV fields can contain commas, double quotes, or line breaks.

After a valid preview appears, Export CSV creates transposed-table.csv. Export Spreadsheet creates transposed-table.xlsx. When a text file exceeds 300,000 characters, the textarea shows a shortened preview while the full file text is processed. Editing that textarea switches processing to the edited text.

Use the transposed shape for field rows

A two-column list such as name, age followed by Ada,36 becomes one row for each original column. That layout can fit a template or import step that expects fields down the first column.

For an XLSX workbook, the preview lets you check the first worksheet before exporting. For irregular pasted lines, enter a value in Pad short/ragged rows with so the missing cells are filled before the columns become rows.

Choose the right dataset transform

Dataset Transform Tools lists related table operations. Use Pivot Table Generator to group fields and calculate count, sum, average, minimum, or maximum. Use Unpivot Table to turn wide columns into long attribute/value records. Use Rename Columns when only the headers should change and cell values and column order should stay the same.

Frequently asked questions

How do I transpose a table in CSV?

Paste the CSV into Paste CSV/TSV data below, set First column is row labels if needed, and review Transposed table preview. The tool swaps row and column positions and keeps the values without grouping them.

How does transpose table handle uneven rows?

Shorter rows are padded to the width of the widest remaining row before transposition. Pad short/ragged rows with supplies the added value, and the preview counts the source rows that needed padding.

What does First column is row labels do?

It renders the new first row as the table header in Transposed table preview. The transposed values and exported row order stay the same.

Can I export a transposed table to XLSX?

Select Export Spreadsheet after a valid preview appears. The download is named transposed-table.xlsx; Export CSV creates transposed-table.csv.
