How to remove junk files from a ZIP
Drop one ZIP into ZIP Junk File Cleaner and inspect the rows before the archive is rebuilt. The table shows each candidate's Path, Size, Matching rule, Flags, and Status. Built-in checks look for names such as .DS_Store, __MACOSX, Thumbs.db, and desktop.ini, then you decide which entries stay excluded.
- Drop a ZIP file here to scan for junk entries, or click browse file and choose one ZIP file.
- Review the Archive entries table. Each row shows Path, Size, Matching rule, Flags, and Status.
- Change an individual Keep? checkbox, click Exclude all detected junk, or click Keep everything.
- Enter a Pattern, choose Match file name or Match full path under Match scope, and click Add pattern.
- Click Clean, then use Download cleaned ZIP for the rebuilt archive and Download removal manifest for its record.
Remove .DS_Store and other OS files from a ZIP
ZIP Junk File Cleaner checks each file's final name and each directory segment in its path. File rules cover .DS_Store, names beginning with ._, Thumbs.db, and desktop.ini. Directory rules cover __MACOSX, .Spotlight-V100, .Trashes, .TemporaryItems, and .fseventsd.
Input:
report.pdf
__MACOSX/._report.pdf
.DS_Store
After excluding detected junk:
report.pdf
Rows with a matching rule start as Exclude. Other readable entries start as Keep. Use Search entries or the Detected junk, Kept, Excluded, Encrypted, Unsafe path, and Duplicate filters to find specific rows.
How custom ZIP removal patterns are matched
Use * for any sequence of characters and ? for one character. Match file name compares the final name in a path; Match full path compares the complete path. Matching ignores letter case and covers the selected target in full. A full-path pattern needs a slash. Patterns with fewer than two literal characters, along with broad patterns that would match almost everything, are rejected. Matching rows start as Exclude and can be changed before Clean.
What the ZIP cleaner warns about
- Encrypted entries are locked to Exclude because their contents cannot be safely rebuilt. The removal manifest lists them as skipped.
- Unsafe path flags mark absolute paths, Windows drive-letter paths such as
C:, and paths containing a..segment. - Duplicate flags mark later entries whose paths match an earlier path without regard to letter case. Both entries remain unless you exclude one.
- A missing ZIP signature or unreadable central directory is reported as unsupported, so the tool stops before rebuilding the archive.
- Kept entries are read and added to a new archive. If a copy fails, the manifest records it. Compression settings can differ from the source.
Where this comes up
- Before sending a project archive, remove
__MACOSXand._entries, keep the project files, and share the downloaded ZIP. - After collecting documents from several computers, search the entry paths for
.DS_Store,Thumbs.db, ordesktop.iniand review each exclusion. - When a build archive contains a known temporary folder, add a full-path pattern such as
build/cache/*, inspect its matches, and rebuild the ZIP.
When to use Archive Clean Tools
Use Archive Clean Tools when the cleanup job covers more than known operating-system entries. ZIP Junk File Cleaner reviews names and paths inside one ZIP, then creates a separate rebuilt ZIP. The parent category lists other archive-cleaning jobs.
