How to merge DOCX files and ZIP archives
Choose DOCX mode for .docx files or ZIP mode for .zip archives. Add at least two matching files, arrange them in Files to merge, choose the relevant policy, and select Merge. DOCX mode creates merged-document.docx; ZIP mode creates merged-archive.zip and records conflicts or blocked entries in Merge report.
Merge files in five steps
- Select DOCX mode or ZIP mode.
- Drop files matching the selected mode into the drop area or choose browse files.
- Check the Files to merge list and drag files to set merge/source order.
- Choose the relevant option under Page-break policy between documents or Duplicate-path policy.
- Click Merge, review Merge report, then choose Download merged file.
Each mode accepts its matching extension only. Switching modes clears the current file list. The page keeps at most 30 selected files and shows an error when their combined size exceeds 200 MB.
What DOCX merge options change
DOCX mode starts with the first valid document and appends later documents in the displayed order. It carries over headings, paragraphs, tables, numbered and bulleted lists, basic styles, and body images when their relationships can be copied. Numbering IDs are remapped. If a later document uses a style ID with a different definition, the earlier definition stays and Merge report receives a warning.
- Page break (single header/footer set) inserts a page break between documents and keeps one header/footer set.
- Section break (per-document header/footer, where supported) creates a section for each later document and attempts to copy its header and footer.
- None - append directly adds each document body without an inserted break.
Input: report.docx, appendix.docx
Order: report.docx, then appendix.docx
Output: merged-document.docx
A DOCX package without word/document.xml is skipped. A document whose XML cannot be parsed is skipped as well. At least two valid DOCX packages are required. Unsupported-content checks run on documents after the first valid document, and findings appear in Merge report.
How to combine ZIP archives with duplicate paths
In ZIP mode, choose Duplicate-path policy before clicking Merge. The policy controls what happens when two archives contain the same path.
- Rename - add a numbered suffix keeps both entries under different names.
- Keep first - ignore later duplicates keeps the first entry.
- Keep last - later entry replaces earlier keeps the later entry.
- Stop - halt the merge on first conflict stops at the first duplicate, shows an error, and produces no output.
Archive 1: docs/plan.txt
Archive 2: docs/plan.txt
Rename: docs/plan.txt, docs/plan (2).txt
Absolute paths, drive-letter paths, and paths containing .. are blocked and reported for every policy. A malformed or unreadable archive can stop the merge before an output file is created.
Choose the policy for your files
Place a report and its appendix in source order, then choose Page break (single header/footer set) when each section should start on a new page. Choose Section break (per-document header/footer, where supported) when the source documents need separate header and footer references.
For repeated ZIP paths, choose Rename - add a numbered suffix when both entries should remain. Keep first or Keep last leaves one copy, based on which archive appears first or last in the merge order.
When to use Document Merge Tools
Use this page for DOCX documents and ZIP archives. For the other document merge pages, open Document Merge Tools. PDF, PPT/PPTX, JSON, XML, log, EML, and MBOX files are rejected here because their merge rules differ.
Frequently asked questions
How do I merge DOCX files in a chosen order?
Select DOCX mode, add at least two .docx files, then drag them in the Files to merge list. Merge uses the displayed order.
Can I combine ZIP files with duplicate names?
Yes. Select ZIP mode and choose Duplicate-path policy to rename both entries, keep the first, keep the last, or stop at the first conflict.
Does the Document Merger upload my files?
No. The selected files are read and merged locally in the browser. The source files are not modified.
What does the DOCX merge report show?
Merge report lists conflicts, warnings, blocked entries, and skipped items when the merger records them. If Stop - halt the merge on first conflict stops a ZIP merge, the tool shows an error and produces no downloadable result.
