Batch File Renamer

Select one or more files (or a whole folder) and rename them all at once using your own naming rules - prefix, suffix, find and replace, case conversion, sequence numbering, and date tokens - locally in your browser. Preview every original-to-proposed rename, exclude what you don't want changed, then download renamed copies. Nothing on your device is renamed or modified.

This is for intentional naming, not portability cleanup. This tool applies naming templates and sequencing you choose - it does not strip unsafe characters or fix reserved names by default. Turn on the optional cleanup preset below for a light pass, or use Filename Sanitizer on the results for the full portable-naming policy.

Any file type - select one file, several files, or a whole folder

How to batch rename files

Select files or a folder, set the naming rules, and check the proposed names before downloading. The preview places Original name beside Proposed name and shows Status and Notes for each entry. Clear an Include checkbox to leave a file out of downloads and manifests. The original files stay unchanged because the downloads use copies of their bytes.

  1. Drop files into Drop files here to rename them, or click browse files to select individual files.
  2. Click Select a folder when the browser supports folder selection.
  3. Set Prefix, Suffix, Find, Replace with, and any optional numbering, date, dimension, extension, or collision settings.
  4. Review Original name, Proposed name, Status, and Notes, then choose the output you need.

Rename multiple files with Find and Replace

Find and Replace with work on the base name before the extension. Plain-text matching ignores case unless Case-sensitive find is checked. Turn on Treat "Find" as a regular expression for pattern matching. An invalid pattern shows an error and disables the downloads and manifest exports until it is corrected.

Find: IMG_
Replace with: trip-
Proposed name: trip-001.jpg

Case conversion runs after replacement. Prefix and Suffix are added around the resulting base name. When selected, Also apply a basic unsafe-character cleanup changes unsafe characters to hyphens, reduces repeated spaces and hyphens, and trims spaces, dots, and hyphens at both ends.

Add sequence numbers, dates, and image dimensions

Enable Add a sequence number to place a padded number Before the name or After the name. Set Start at, Step, and Zero padding (digits). The counter advances through included files in their selection order, with hyphens separating the number from the name.

Add a date token uses Today's date or File's last-modified date, formatted as YYYY-MM-DD. Add image dimensions (WxH) - only when readable appends dimensions after the browser decodes a recognized image extension. If decoding fails, the dimensions stay out of the name and the table records a note.

Review duplicate names before downloading

Names are compared without regard to case. With Auto-resolve collisions with a numbered suffix off, duplicate proposed names receive Collision - unresolved, and the download buttons stay disabled. Turn it on and choose Parentheses: name (2).ext, Dash: name-2.ext, or Underscore: name_2.ext to number later matches.

Extension handling keeps the original extension by default. Choosing Change extension to… changes the downloaded name only; file bytes are copied unchanged, so this does not convert the file. The mapping table can add a content-mismatch warning when a recognized signature conflicts with the new extension.

Choose a download or manifest

  • Use Download renamed copy when exactly one file is included.
  • Use Download ZIP + manifest when at least two files are included. The ZIP contains the renamed files, manifest.csv, and manifest.json.
  • Use Manifest CSV or Manifest JSON when you need the mapping without downloading the files.

When to use Batch File Renamer

Use Batch File Renamer when the same naming rules apply to several selected files. The page reads files with browser APIs and creates local downloads. Its code contains no fetch, XMLHttpRequest, sendBeacon, or form post that sends file contents. For related file-organization tasks, see Organize Tools.

Frequently asked questions

How do I bulk rename files with a prefix?

Enter the text in Prefix, review each Proposed name, and download the included files. The prefix is added to the processed base name, before the original extension.

Can I rename multiple files without changing their contents?

Yes. Downloads use the original file bytes under the proposed names. Changing Extension handling changes the name and does not convert the file.

What happens when batch rename creates duplicate names?

Duplicate proposed names are marked Collision - unresolved and the download buttons are disabled by default. Fix the rule, clear an Include checkbox, or enable Auto-resolve collisions with a numbered suffix.

Can I add a date or image size to a filename?

Yes. Use Add a date token for today's date or a file's last-modified date, and use Add image dimensions (WxH) - only when readable for recognized images the browser decodes successfully.

Does Batch File Renamer upload my files?

The page code has no request that sends file contents. Files are read in the browser, then copied into local downloads or a ZIP and manifest.
