PDF Document Inspector

Inspect a PDF's document and page structure locally in your browser - page count, dimensions, orientation, rotation, encryption and permission indicators, metadata, embedded fonts, bookmarks and hyperlinks - without changing a single byte.

How to inspect PDF structure

Select a PDF with Drop a PDF file here or browse file. PDF Document Inspector reads it and builds a report for pages, metadata, permissions, fonts, bookmarks, and links. The original file stays unchanged.

  1. Drop a PDF file onto Drop a PDF file here, or click browse file.
  2. Review the stat cards, metadata, permission flags, page-size distribution, fonts, and bookmark hierarchy.
  3. Search links with Search links, or find one page with Jump to page.
  4. Apply Portrait, Landscape, Rotated, or Has links, then choose CSV or JSON.

What PDF page details are reported

Each readable page gets a width and height in points and inches, plus its orientation and rotation. The orientation uses the displayed shape after rotation, so a page turned 90 degrees can switch between Portrait and Landscape. Page-size distribution groups identical dimensions and shows up to 12 groups.

Input: report.pdf
Page report: width, height, orientation, rotation
Document report: metadata, permissions, fonts, bookmarks, links

Use the page filters to narrow the table. Jump to page matches one page number exactly. Reset page filters clears the page search and active filters.

CSV contains readable page rows that match the current search and filters. JSON includes the file name and size, page count, metadata, permissions, fonts, bookmarks, links, pages, and warnings.

How PDF links, fonts, and bookmarks are found

The hyperlink inventory combines link annotations with URLs found in the existing text layer. Search links checks the URL, destination text, and page number. The font list shows the font name, type, embedded status, and subset indication. Bookmarks appear as nested entries.

The inspector reads the text layer to find visible URLs. It does not OCR scanned pages, extract tables or images, open embedded child files, or execute document scripts.

What PDF metadata and permissions show

The metadata panel can show title, author, subject, keywords, creator, producer, creation and modification dates, PDF version, XMP presence, linearization, and raw indicators for JavaScript or PDF collections. The Permission flags panel reports declared settings for printing, copying or extracting text and graphics, modifying contents, annotations, form fields, accessibility extraction, assembly, and high-quality printing.

A permission label reports the declaration inside the PDF. Another application can enforce that declaration differently. A password-protected file that requires a password produces a limited report with the password requirement.

PDF Document Inspector limits

  • The inspector stops at 5,000 pages. It stores up to 20,000 hyperlink entries and 2,000 font entries.
  • A malformed file can fail to open. The parser can also skip individual pages, fonts, or annotations and list them in parser notes.
  • Encryption, linearization, JavaScript, and collection checks use raw bytes as best-effort signals. The checks do not scan every byte of the file.
  • Page output uses the single page value supplied by pdf.js. The report does not show or export separate MediaBox, CropBox, TrimBox, BleedBox, or ArtBox values.

Where PDF structure checks come up

Check mixed page sizes and rotated pages before sending a PDF to print. Review metadata, bookmarks, and embedded fonts before archiving a file.

Search the hyperlink inventory for a destination. You can also export page rows as CSV or download JSON when you need the parsed structure alongside other file checks.

When to use PDF Analyze Tools

Use PDF Analyze Tools for a PDF inspection or measurement task. Choose PDF Document Inspector for the document tree and page-level report covering structure, metadata, permissions, fonts, bookmarks, and links. Editing, OCR, table extraction, image extraction, and protection changes require a different tool.

Frequently asked questions

How do I inspect PDF structure in a browser?

Can I inspect a password-protected PDF?

A PDF that requires a password returns a limited report showing the password requirement. The inspector does not guess or crack passwords.

Does PDF Document Inspector modify the original file?

The script does not write changes back to the PDF. CSV and JSON download report data, and the original file remains unchanged.
