Image Clean Tools

Permanently blur or redact faces, plates, and other sensitive areas of an image.

Image clean tools for redacting sensitive areas

Use Image Clean Tools when an image contains a face, license plate, or another area that should not remain visible. The category currently has one editor, Image Privacy Editor, with four ways to redact a selected region: blur, pixelation, solid fill, and edge crop. You can draw each region, adjust it, review the image, and export the redacted result.

Choose a way to clean an image

The category's child page is Image Privacy Editor. Open it when you need to hide selected areas before sharing an image or exporting a copy.

  • Image Privacy Editor applies blur, pixelation, solid fill, or edge crop to selected regions.

How the Image Privacy Editor handles regions

Draw a region around the content to hide. You can resize, reorder, and review the region before exporting. Image Privacy Editor can also suggest faces detected locally, and you confirm each suggestion before it becomes part of the redaction.

A single image can contain a face and a license plate that need different treatment:

Input: [person's face] [license plate]
Output: [blurred face] [solid-filled plate]

Those are two separate regions, so each one can use its own method. The export contains a redacted image and a redaction manifest, which records the regions handled.

Redact images before sharing them

Image Privacy Editor processes the image locally in your browser. Review the working image on the page, check each marked area, and then export the result. Face-detection suggestions are optional, so you can draw, resize, reorder, and review the regions yourself.

What you can change in an image

  • Blur a selected region.
  • Pixelate a selected region.
  • Cover a selected region with a solid fill.
  • Crop at an edge to remove a selected region.
  • Export the redacted image with a redaction manifest.

When to use Image Tools instead

Start here when the job is to hide selected areas in an image. Use the parent Image Tools category for another image job, including compression, conversion, creation, inspection, GIF work, SVG work, icon work, or color work.
