How to find a color by name or code

Start with a CSS value, a color name, or Picker. Color Finder keeps the current color in sync across HEX, RGB, HSL, HSV, and CMYK, then uses it for palettes, saved swatches, and contrast checks.

  1. Enter #663399, rgb(102,51,153), or rebeccapurple in CSS color, or choose Picker.
  2. Adjust Hue, Saturation, and Lightness, or edit HEX, Alpha (0-1), RGB, HSL, HSV, or CMYK.
  3. Type a name or code into Search under Find by name or code, then select a matching color.
  4. Choose a Scheme in Palette maker, then copy the swatches or add them to My palette.
  5. Enter Text color and Background color in Contrast checker, then read the ratio and badges.

Color Finder conversions for HEX, RGB, HSL, HSV and CMYK

Enter a value in any color field and the other fields update. Alpha (0-1) controls transparency. Use comma-separated numbers in RGB, HSL, HSV, and CMYK; HSL and HSV also accept percent signs.

Input: #663399
RGB: 102, 51, 153
HSL: 270, 50%, 40%
HSV: 270, 67%, 60%
CMYK: 33, 67, 0, 40

An incomplete or non-numeric comma-separated value leaves the current color unchanged. CSS color also accepts names and CSS values that the browser parses into a color.

Find CSS colors by name or hex code

Search in Find by name or code checks 148 CSS color names and their HEX values. Type part of a name, such as blue or sea, or enter part of a HEX value. The list shows up to 40 matches. An empty field shows the 12 names nearest to the current color.

Build and save a color palette

Choose Analogous, Complementary, Split complementary, Triadic, Tetradic, or Monochrome in Scheme. Shades (to black), Tints (to white), and Tones (to gray) show Colors, which accepts 2 to 12. Click a swatch to copy its HEX value, or use Copy CSS or Copy JSON for the palette.

Add to my palette saves the current color or generated palette. Repeated values are skipped, and My palette stores up to 64 values. Click a saved swatch to load it, or choose Clear to empty the list.

Check text and background contrast

Contrast checker compares Text color with Background color and shows the ratio to two decimal places, followed by :1. The badges check AA text at 4.5, AAA text at 7, AA large at 3, and AAA large at 4.5. If either field is invalid, the ratio becomes - and the message reads Enter two valid colors.

Examples of Color Finder tasks

  • Convert a brand HEX value into RGB, HSL, and CMYK values for a style sheet or handoff.
  • Search a CSS color name, then copy its generated palette as CSS variables or JSON.
  • Enter a text color and background color, then check the displayed WCAG badges.

When to use Image Color Picker instead

Use Image Color Tools when you are choosing among color-related jobs in this category. Color Finder starts with a color value or name and works through conversion, palettes, saved swatches, and contrast.

Choose Image Color Picker when the source is an image and you need an exact pixel color, a zoom loupe, dominant-color extraction, or CSS and JSON output.
