Remove Numbers from Text

Strip numeric content from your text using digit-character or whole-number-token matching, with optional replacement and whitespace cleanup.

Removal options

How to remove numbers from text

Paste text into the input area or choose Upload, then select a removal mode. The result removes each match or replaces it with the text in Placeholder. Remove whole number tokens also lets you choose US, EU, or Plain number formatting, with optional signs and percent marks.

  1. Paste text into the input area or choose Upload.
  2. Choose Remove digit characters or Remove whole number tokens.
  3. Select the number format and matching options when Remove whole number tokens is active.
  4. Choose Remove or Replace with placeholder, then review the result and use Copy or Download.

How to remove digit characters or whole number tokens

Remove digit characters matches each individual 0-9 character. Letters and punctuation stay in place, so v1.2-beta becomes v.-beta. Remove whole number tokens matches a number pattern as one unit. A directly attached sign or percent mark joins that match when its option is selected.

Input: Room 42 on floor 3
Output: Room on floor

Whole-number matching does not treat dates, versions, or product codes as special fields. It can remove numeric parts inside those strings, and adjacent numeric parts can be matched separately. Select Remove to delete matches or Replace with placeholder to insert the text from Placeholder.

Which number format should you choose?

In Remove whole number tokens mode, choose the policy that matches the punctuation in the values:

  • US (1,234.56) treats commas as thousands separators and a period as the decimal mark.
  • EU (1.234,56) treats periods as thousands separators and a comma as the decimal mark.
  • Plain (no separators) matches an unbroken digit run with an optional period or comma as the decimal mark.
  • Include leading sign (+/-) includes a directly attached + or -.
  • Include trailing percent (%) includes a directly attached %.

With US, Include leading sign (+/-), and Include trailing percent (%) selected, -1,234.50% is one whole-number match. The format, sign, and percent controls are hidden when Remove digit characters is selected.

What Clean up leftover whitespace changes

  • Clean up leftover whitespace collapses each run of spaces or tabs to one space and removes spaces or tabs at the end of every line.
  • Show before-and-after preview displays the original and transformed text in separate panels.

Line breaks remain in place. With Remove selected, this input becomes:

Before: Total: 42
After: Total:

The output and match count update when the input or a control changes. The output area is read-only. The result section appears when the input contains non-whitespace text, and Copy and Download stay disabled when the output is empty.

Where removing numbers from text comes up

Digit mode can remove the digits from a version string such as v2.1.3-beta while leaving its dots and hyphen. The result is v..-beta.

For an order message such as Order #A19-284B shipped on 2024-03-05, the tool removes the numeric pieces that match the selected mode. Letters and punctuation around those pieces remain unless a cleanup option changes whitespace.

Replace with placeholder inserts [number removed] for each match when that text is in Placeholder. Copy or Download then uses the transformed output.

When another text cleanup tool fits better

Use Text Cleanup & Filter Tools when a different text operation is needed. Choose Remove Punctuation when punctuation should change while numbers stay. Choose Remove Special Characters when you need controls for spaces, newlines, numbers, and extra characters. Choose Trim Whitespace when the job is limited to leading or trailing spaces, with optional inner-space collapsing.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove numbers from text without removing punctuation?

Select Remove digit characters to delete each digit while leaving punctuation in place. Clean up leftover whitespace can still change spaces or tabs left behind.

How do I remove a whole number such as -1,234.50%?

Select Remove whole number tokens, choose US (1,234.56), and keep Include leading sign (+/-) and Include trailing percent (%) selected. The value is then matched with its attached sign and percent mark.

Can I replace numbers instead of removing them?

Yes. Select Replace with placeholder, enter the replacement in Placeholder, and the tool inserts that text for every match.

Does this tool extract or calculate numbers?

No. It returns transformed text with matched digits or number tokens removed or replaced, and it does not produce a separate number list or calculate values.
