How to extract ISBNs from text
Paste text into Input text, or select Upload and load a supported text file. ISBN Extractor lists ISBN-10 and ISBN-13 candidates, their checksum status, source line, and nearby context. The displayed values can be filtered, copied, or downloaded.
Extract ISBN-10 and ISBN-13 values
- Paste text into
Input text, or selectUploadand choose a supported text file:.txt,.csv,.json,.log, or.md. - Read the rows under
Extracted ISBN matches. Each row shows the ISBN, type, checksum status, line, and context. - Change
Unique only,Valid checksum only, orNormalize (strip hyphens/spaces)to change the displayed list. - Select
Copyto place the displayed list on the clipboard, or selectDownloadto save a text file.
What the ISBN extraction options change
Unique only starts checked and removes repeats by the ISBN's characters after spaces and hyphens are removed. The same ISBN in two separator styles therefore appears once. Valid checksum only also starts checked, hiding candidates with a failed checksum. Clear it to show those rows as Invalid checksum.
Normalize (strip hyphens/spaces) changes the output to ungrouped characters. When it is clear, the output uses the tool's own grouping around the ISBN-13 prefix and check digit, or the ISBN-10 check digit. The source's original separator pattern is not retained.

What ISBN formats the extractor recognizes
The matcher accepts ISBN-10 values with nine digits and a final digit or X. It accepts ISBN-13 values that start with 978 or 979. Spaces and hyphens can separate the characters.
The checksum status tests the identifier's ISBN-10 or ISBN-13 checksum. It does not verify that a publisher assigned the ISBN to a book. Each result keeps its source line and a nearby text snippet. Dots are not a supported separator, and the extractor does not retrieve titles, authors, publishers, or other book metadata.
What the ISBN result rows contain
The Extracted ISBN matches table shows the displayed ISBN, its type, and either Valid or Invalid checksum. It also shows the source line and a nearby context snippet, so you can trace a match back to the input.
The output text area contains one displayed ISBN per line. The result count reports how many rows remain after the selected filters. Copy and Download stay unavailable when no rows remain.
Clear Unique only when repeated appearances need to remain in the output. Clear Valid checksum only when you need to inspect candidates that fail the checksum.

Frequently asked questions
How do I extract ISBNs from a text file?
Select Upload and choose a .txt, .csv, .json, .log, or .md file. Its contents load into Input text, and matching rows appear under Extracted ISBN matches.
Can I find ISBN-10 and ISBN-13 in the same text?
Yes. ISBN Extractor checks both formats in one input and labels each row ISBN-10 or ISBN-13. An ISBN-10 can end in X; an ISBN-13 must start with 978 or 979.
Why did my ISBN fail the checksum?
The candidate's check digit does not satisfy the checksum rule for its detected type. Clear Valid checksum only to keep the row visible and read Invalid checksum in the table.
Does ISBN Extractor look up book details?
No. It reports the candidate, type, checksum status, line, and context. It does not query a book database for titles or other metadata.
Does the ISBN extractor send my text anywhere?
The page's ISBN extraction code makes no network request with the input text. Pasted text and selected file contents are processed in the browser.
