Gross Margin Calculator

Enter revenue and direct cost for a period to calculate gross profit and gross margin percentage. The formula, every assumption, and intermediate values are shown alongside the result.

Total sales revenue for the period.

Materials, direct labor, and other costs directly tied to what you sold (e.g. cost of goods sold). Cannot exceed revenue.

A label only - keep revenue and direct cost on this same basis.

How to use the gross margin calculator

Enter Revenue and Direct cost for the same period and business scope. After you click Calculate, the page shows Gross profit, Gross margin, and Direct cost as % of revenue, along with the formulas and assumptions used. A valid result can be copied or downloaded.

  1. Enter Revenue, using the total sales revenue for the period.
  2. Enter Direct cost for materials, direct labor, or other costs tied to what you sold.
  3. Choose Period: Monthly, Quarterly, Annual, or Per project.
  4. Choose a Currency symbol and click Calculate.
  5. When the result appears, choose Copy result or Download result (.txt).

Gross profit and gross margin formula

The calculation uses Revenue and Direct cost to produce three reported values:

Gross profit = Revenue - Direct cost

Gross margin % = Gross profit / Revenue x 100

Direct cost as % of revenue = Direct cost / Revenue x 100

For Revenue of $50,000 and Direct cost of $30,000, the result is $20,000 gross profit, 40.00% gross margin, and 60.00% direct cost as a percentage of revenue.

Revenue: $50,000
Direct cost: $30,000
Gross profit: $20,000
Gross margin: 40%

The result includes the selected Period, Revenue, Direct cost, and each calculation in the assumptions table. Monetary and percentage values display to two decimal places.

What the Period and Currency symbol controls change

Period adds a label to the result. Monthly, Quarterly, Annual, and Per project do not annualize or convert the figures, so Revenue and Direct cost must use the same time basis and business scope.

Currency symbol changes the symbol shown with monetary values. It does not convert currencies or use exchange rates. Select None to show monetary values without a symbol.

Gross margin calculator input rules

Revenue must be a number greater than zero. Direct cost must be zero or more and cannot exceed Revenue. An invalid entry hides the result and shows an error message. When Direct cost is zero, Gross profit equals Revenue and Gross margin is 100%.

Enter costs tied to what was sold, such as materials, direct labor, or cost of goods sold. The page has no separate fields for overhead, administration, marketing, taxes, returns, discounts, operating expenses, or net margin.

The calculation uses the values entered on the page. It does not fetch live rates, market prices, industry benchmarks, or accounting records.

What the result contains

The result section shows Gross profit with the selected Period, Gross margin, and Direct cost as % of revenue. The assumptions table repeats Revenue and Direct cost, lists the Period, and shows the formulas with their calculated values.

Changing Revenue, Direct cost, Period, or Currency symbol hides the current result until you click Calculate again. Reset clears the entries and returns Currency symbol to $ and Period to Monthly.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate gross margin from revenue and direct cost?

Subtract Direct cost from Revenue to get gross profit, then divide gross profit by Revenue and multiply by 100 to get gross margin percentage.

What does the Gross Margin Calculator show?

It shows Gross profit, Gross margin, and Direct cost as % of revenue, along with Revenue, Direct cost, Period, formulas, and assumptions.

What should I enter as Direct cost?

Enter materials, direct labor, and other costs directly tied to what you sold, including cost of goods sold. Keep this figure on the same period and business scope as Revenue.

Does the Period selector change the calculation?

No. Period adds a Monthly, Quarterly, Annual, or Per project label; it does not change or annualize Revenue or Direct cost.

Why does the gross margin calculator reject my figures?

Revenue must be greater than zero, Direct cost must be zero or more, and Direct cost cannot be greater than Revenue. Correct the invalid value, then click Calculate again.
