Net Profit Margin Calculator

Enter revenue, operating expenses, interest, and tax for a period to calculate net profit and net profit margin percentage. The formula, every assumption, and intermediate values are shown alongside the result.

Total sales revenue for the period.

Cost of goods sold plus overhead, admin, marketing, salaries, rent, and other operating costs for the period.

Interest paid on loans or other debt for the period. Enter 0 if none.

Income tax owed on profit for the period. Enter 0 if none or not yet known.

A label only - keep all figures on this same basis.

How to use the Net Profit Margin Calculator

Enter Revenue, Operating expenses, Interest expense, and Tax expense for one period. The Net Profit Margin Calculator works out operating profit, pre-tax profit, net profit, and net profit margin, then shows the formula and each entered assumption. Currency symbol and Period change how the result is labeled or displayed; they do not change the calculation.

Calculate net profit margin in four steps

  1. Enter Revenue, Operating expenses, Interest expense, and Tax expense on the same period and basis. Revenue must be greater than 0. Each expense can be 0 or more.
  2. Select a value in Currency symbol. In Period, choose Monthly, Quarterly, Annual, or Per project. These controls label or format the output.
  3. Click Calculate. The result includes net profit, net profit margin, operating profit, pre-tax profit, total deductions, the assumptions, and the formula.
  4. Click Copy result for the plain-text summary or Download result (.txt) for a text file. Click Reset to clear the fields and restore $ and Monthly.

Net profit margin formula and example

The calculation takes three deductions in order. Revenue minus Operating expenses gives operating profit; subtract Interest expense to get pre-tax profit; subtract Tax expense to get net profit. Net profit divided by Revenue, multiplied by 100, gives net profit margin.

Revenue: 100000
Operating expenses: 60000
Interest expense: 5000
Tax expense: 8000
Net profit: 27000
Net profit margin: 27.00%

These figures produce 40000 in operating profit and 35000 in pre-tax profit. The calculator displays monetary and percentage results to two decimal places.

What Currency symbol and Period change

Currency symbol changes the prefix shown with monetary results, and None removes that prefix. The calculator does not convert your numbers or apply exchange rates. Period adds a label such as Monthly or Per project, so the selected period does not convert or annualize the figures.

Period: Monthly
Result label: Net profit (Monthly)
Currency symbol: None

What happens with invalid inputs

Revenue must contain a finite number greater than 0. Operating expenses, Interest expense, and Tax expense must each contain a finite number of 0 or more. Calculate shows an error instead of a result when a value fails a check. Editing an input or changing a select hides the previous result until you calculate again.

Keep every amount on the same reporting basis. Interest and tax are entered as amounts, so the calculator does not derive them from an interest rate, loan term, or tax bracket. When total deductions exceed Revenue, net profit and net profit margin are negative.

Where this comes up

For a monthly calculation, enter monthly Revenue and monthly costs, then leave Period set to Monthly. The same rule applies to Quarterly and Annual: every amount must use the selected reporting basis.

Per project works for one project revenue figure and its assigned expenses. Select Per project, calculate the result, and copy the displayed summary when you need the figures in another document.

When another business calculator fits better

Open Business Calculators for other business calculations. The Gross Margin Calculator fits Revenue and direct cost when you need gross profit or gross margin. The Business Profit Calculator includes profitability, markup, break-even, projection, and billable-rate modes. For project revenue with labor hours and rate, materials, allocated overhead, and an optional estimated tax rate, use the Project Profit Calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate net profit margin?

Subtract Operating expenses, Interest expense, and Tax expense from Revenue to get net profit. Divide net profit by Revenue and multiply by 100 to get net profit margin. The calculator also shows operating profit and pre-tax profit.

What is the net profit margin formula?

Net profit margin % = Net profit / Revenue x 100. Net profit = Revenue - Operating expenses - Interest expense - Tax expense.

Does Period convert monthly figures into annual figures?

Period only labels the result as Monthly, Quarterly, Annual, or Per project. Keep every entered amount on the same basis because the selection does not convert the figures.

Can net profit margin be negative?

Yes. When total deductions exceed Revenue, the calculator shows a negative net profit and a negative net profit margin.
