Markup calculator modes and formulas
Use Cost + selling price when both amounts are known. The calculator subtracts cost from selling price to get profit, then divides profit by cost for markup % and by selling price for margin %. Use Cost + target markup % to calculate selling price. Use Selling price + target margin % to calculate cost.
Cost: $60
Selling price: $90
Profit: $30
Markup %: 50.00%
Margin %: 33.33%
With a $60 cost and $90 selling price, the result is $30 profit, 50.00% markup, and 33.33% margin. The result also prints the five formulas used by the calculator, including the formulas for finding selling price from markup and cost from margin.
Markup and margin input limits
Cost and Selling price must be greater than zero, and selling price must be at least cost. Target markup % can be zero or higher. Target margin % must be at least zero and below 100. Invalid input shows an error and hides the result.
Money and percentage results display two decimal places, while the calculation uses the numbers you enter. A target margin entered as 33.33% can produce a slightly different cost than the exact repeating percentage. The calculator represents one unit and one cost figure, so include any costs you want in that figure. Taxes, discounts, shipping, and payment fees are not separate inputs.
Where this markup calculator fits
Enter a product cost and planned selling price to check profit, markup %, and margin % before setting a price. If you have a cost and a target markup, use the second mode to calculate selling price.
For gross profit and gross margin from revenue and direct cost, use the Gross Margin Calculator. For COGS, profit margins, break-even points, projected profit, and billable hourly rate, use the Business Profit Calculator. The Business Calculators category covers pricing, profitability, marketing, SaaS, cash runway, and inventory figures.
The calculation runs in your browser and uses only the figures you enter. The page script makes no request with those values. You can copy the result or download it as a text file.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate markup from cost and selling price?
Enter the figures under Cost + selling price and select Calculate. The calculator divides profit by cost and multiplies by 100.
What is the difference between markup and margin?
Markup expresses profit as a percentage of cost. Margin expresses profit as a percentage of selling price. With a $60 cost and $90 selling price, the results are 50.00% markup and 33.33% margin.
How do I find selling price from a target markup?
Choose Cost + target markup %, enter Cost and Target markup %, then select Calculate. Selling price equals cost plus cost multiplied by markup percentage divided by 100.
How do I find cost from a target margin?
Choose Selling price + target margin %, enter Selling price and Target margin %, then select Calculate. The calculator finds target profit from selling price and margin, then subtracts it from selling price.
Does the markup calculator use live pricing data?
It uses only the cost, selling price, and target percentage you enter. The calculator does not load market prices, competitor data, or accounting records.
