MRR Calculator

Enter your starting Monthly Recurring Revenue plus new, expansion, contraction, and churned MRR for the period to generate a full MRR movement report. The formula, every assumption, and intermediate values are shown alongside the result.

Total recurring revenue at the beginning of the period (e.g. start of the month).

Recurring revenue from brand-new subscribers acquired during the period.

Additional revenue from existing subscribers who upgraded, added seats, or bought more.

Revenue lost from existing subscribers who downgraded but did not cancel. Enter as a positive number.

Revenue lost from subscribers who fully cancelled during the period. Enter as a positive number.

Use one period for every MRR input

Enter values for the same period. Starting MRR is the opening recurring revenue. New MRR comes from brand-new subscribers, Expansion MRR comes from existing subscribers who add revenue, Contraction MRR is revenue lost after a downgrade, and Churned MRR is revenue lost after a full cancellation. The report calculates Ending MRR and shows the formula, assumptions, intermediate values, and a result you can copy or download.

Enter the MRR movement inputs

  1. Choose Currency symbol. It changes the displayed symbol only; it does not convert any value.
  2. Enter Starting MRR, New MRR, Expansion MRR, Contraction MRR, and Churned MRR for the same period. Enter Contraction MRR and Churned MRR as positive amounts.
  3. Click Calculate MRR movement to generate the report.
  4. After a valid calculation, click Copy result or Download result (.txt).

Read Ending MRR and the related rates

The formula adds Starting MRR, New MRR, and Expansion MRR, then subtracts Contraction MRR and Churned MRR. Net New MRR measures that movement without Starting MRR. The report also calculates Net MRR Growth Rate, Gross MRR Churn Rate, Contraction Rate, Gross Revenue Retention (GRR), Net Revenue Retention (NRR), and MRR Quick Ratio.

Starting MRR: $50,000
New MRR: $4,000
Expansion MRR: $1,500
Contraction MRR: $800
Churned MRR: $1,200
Ending MRR: $53,500.00
Net New MRR: +$3,500.00
Net MRR Growth Rate: 7.00%
MRR Quick Ratio: 2.75

Money and percentage values use two decimal places. The assumptions table repeats the five inputs and derived values, so each part of the result can be checked against the formula.

What the MRR calculator checks

Each input must be a finite number of zero or more. Use zero for a category with no movement. Contraction MRR cannot exceed Starting MRR plus New MRR plus Expansion MRR, and Churned MRR cannot exceed Starting MRR.

The two loss checks run separately. Both can pass when the combined losses still make Ending MRR negative.

When MRR rates show n/a

When Starting MRR is zero and Net New MRR is positive, Net MRR Growth Rate displays n/a. Gross MRR Churn Rate and Contraction Rate display 0.00%, while Gross Revenue Retention and Net Revenue Retention display 100.00%. When Contraction MRR and Churned MRR are both zero, MRR Quick Ratio displays n/a (no churn or contraction).

Use the report to separate MRR movement

The result keeps New MRR, Expansion MRR, Contraction MRR, and Churned MRR as separate rows before showing Ending MRR and the calculated rates. The plain-text result includes the formula and all derived values, so you can copy or download the same figures shown in the report.

Choose another calculator for a different measure

Use ARR Calculator for annual recurring revenue from recurring revenue and a billing period. Use Churn Rate Calculator for customer or revenue churn from starting, lost, gained, and ending values. For a report with MRR, ARR, CAC, LTV, burn, runway, and Rule of 40, use SaaS Metrics Calculator. The Business Calculators category lists the other business measures.

Questions about MRR movement

How do I calculate monthly recurring revenue movement?

Add Starting MRR, New MRR, and Expansion MRR, then subtract Contraction MRR and Churned MRR. Enter all five values for one period and click Calculate MRR movement.

How do I calculate Ending MRR?

Ending MRR equals Starting MRR + New MRR + Expansion MRR - Contraction MRR - Churned MRR. Enter Contraction MRR and Churned MRR as positive amounts; the formula subtracts them.

What is the difference between Expansion MRR, Contraction MRR, and Churned MRR?

Expansion MRR is added revenue from existing subscribers. Contraction MRR is revenue lost when existing subscribers downgrade, while Churned MRR is revenue lost when subscribers fully cancel. The calculator subtracts both loss categories and keeps them separate.

Why does the MRR Quick Ratio show n/a?

MRR Quick Ratio shows n/a (no churn or contraction) when both loss inputs are zero. Its denominator is Churned MRR plus Contraction MRR.

Can I use this MRR calculator with live billing data?

No. The calculator uses only the numbers you type into the fields. It does not connect to a billing system or fetch live records, and the calculation runs in the browser.
