Calculate the sheet count
Start with the total surface area. Enter it in Wall or ceiling area, choose its unit, then enter one sheet's width and length plus Waste / overage %. The calculation converts the inputs to square feet, adds waste, and rounds the required sheet count up.
- Enter the total in Wall or ceiling area, then choose sq ft, sq m, or sq yd.
- Enter Sheet width and Sheet length. Choose ft, in, m, or cm for each dimension.
- Review Waste / overage %. It starts at 10 and accepts values from 0 to 50.
- Click Calculate to display the estimate.
- Use Copy result or Download result (.txt) when you need the text output elsewhere.
How the sheet count is calculated
The calculator converts the area and sheet dimensions to square feet, then applies waste before dividing by one sheet's area. It uses ceil, so a fraction of a sheet becomes the next whole sheet.
500 sq ft, 4 ft x 8 ft, 10% waste
Area with waste = 500 x 1.10 = 550 sq ft
Sheets needed = ceil(550 / 32) = 18
Sheet area = Sheet width x Sheet lengthArea with waste = Area x (1 + Waste % / 100)Sheets needed = ceil(Area with waste / Sheet area)
What appears after Calculate
After you click Calculate, the result shows Sheets needed, Area per sheet, Total coverage bought, and Actual overage. The assumptions table lists the entered area, its square-foot conversion, converted sheet dimensions, waste allowance, area with waste, rounded sheet count, coverage, and overage.
The estimate uses the dimensions and percentage you enter. It does not calculate joint compound, tape, screws, or corner bead. It also does not fetch supplier or pricing data, and it is not certified construction or purchasing advice.
Enter one combined wall or ceiling area
For each wall, calculate length x height. For a ceiling, calculate length x width. Add separate surfaces first, then enter the combined total in Wall or ceiling area.
The calculator does not detect doors, windows, or other openings. Subtract their areas before entering the total when you want them excluded. If you leave them in, they remain part of the area used for the waste calculation.
- Wall or ceiling area: 0.1 to 100,000 in the selected sq ft, sq m, or sq yd unit.
- Sheet width: 1 to 120 in the selected ft, in, m, or cm unit.
- Sheet length: 1 to 240 in the selected ft, in, m, or cm unit.
- Waste / overage %: 0 to 50.
A blank, non-numeric, or out-of-range value stops the calculation and displays an error. Changing any input hides the current result until you click Calculate again.
Use the estimate for a material check
For a room remodel, add the wall areas, subtract openings, and use the rounded sheet count when checking the materials list. For a ceiling, enter the ceiling area and the sheet dimensions you intend to use.
To compare sheet sizes, keep the area the same and change Sheet width or Sheet length. You can copy each plain-text result for a project record.
When another construction calculator fits better
Use Construction Calculators when you need a different material or project estimate. Concrete Calculator fits slabs or footings and returns concrete volume and bag count; Flooring Calculator fits flooring quantities based on area, box coverage, or roll size; and Construction Materials Calculator fits projects that need one of its other calculation modes.
Frequently asked questions
How many drywall sheets do I need for a wall?
You need the rounded-up Sheets needed value after entering the total wall area, sheet size, and Waste / overage %. For example, 500 sq ft with 4 ft x 8 ft sheets and 10% waste produces 18 sheets.
Can I use a drywall sheet calculator with metric measurements?
Yes. Choose sq m for Wall or ceiling area, and choose m or cm for Sheet width and Sheet length. The calculation converts those values to square feet internally.
Does the drywall calculator subtract doors and windows?
No. It uses the area you enter as-is. Subtract openings before entering the total when they should be excluded.
Can I copy or download the drywall sheet estimate?
Yes. After Calculate produces a result, Copy result copies the plain-text estimate when clipboard access is available; Download result (.txt) saves it as a text file.
