How to use the Flooring Calculator
Start with the total area you need to cover, then choose the mode that matches the product packaging. The result shows the waste-adjusted area, the coverage used, and the whole number of boxes or rolls required.
- Choose Boxed planks / tiles for a package with stated coverage, or choose Rolled flooring for material sold by width and length.
- Enter Floor area and choose
sq ft,sq m, orsq yd. Add room areas together before entering the total. - Set Waste / overage %. It starts at 10%; enter 0 to leave waste out of the calculation.
- Enter Coverage per box / pack, or enter Roll width and Roll length.
- Select Calculate. After the result appears, Copy result puts its text on the clipboard and Download result (.txt) saves a text file.
How the flooring quantity is calculated
The calculator adds the waste percentage to the entered area, divides by one box or roll's coverage, and rounds up. Boxed flooring uses Coverage per box / pack. Rolled flooring uses Roll width multiplied by Roll length.
Floor area: 500 sq ft
Waste / overage %: 10
Coverage per box / pack: 20 sq ft
Area with waste: 550 sq ft
Result: 28 boxes
The calculation uses Area with waste = Floor area x (1 + Waste % / 100). It then uses ceil(Area with waste / Coverage per box) or ceil(Area with waste / Roll coverage).
Choosing between the two flooring modes
Use Boxed planks / tiles when the packaging gives coverage for one box or pack. Enter that figure in Coverage per box / pack and select its area unit.
Use Rolled flooring when one unit has a width and a length. Roll width and Roll length can use different units: ft, in, m, or cm. The calculator converts both values before multiplying them.
What the result shows
The result includes the quantity needed, coverage per unit, Total coverage bought, Actual overage, converted floor area, waste allowance, area with waste, and the rounded quantity. It also lists the assumptions and the formula used.
Copy result copies the plain-text summary. Download result (.txt) saves flooring-calculator-result.txt. Changing a field or switching modes clears the displayed result.
Input limits and items left out
Missing, non-numeric, or out-of-range values stop the calculation and show an error. Floor area accepts 0.1 to 1,000,000. Waste / overage % accepts 0 to 50. Coverage per box / pack accepts 0.01 to 10,000. Roll width accepts 0.1 to 600, and Roll length accepts 0.1 to 6,000, in the selected unit.
The calculator takes one total floor area. It does not calculate underlayment, adhesive, trim, baseboard, transitions, or room-specific measurements. Enter the allowance for cuts, pattern matching, and mistakes in Waste / overage %. The calculation uses only your entries in the browser and does not perform supplier or pricing lookups.
Examples for each mode
For several rooms, add their areas, check the coverage printed on the plank or tile packaging, and enter the totals in Boxed planks / tiles.
For sheet vinyl or carpet, choose Rolled flooring, enter the material's width and sold length, then review the roll count after waste.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate flooring waste?
Enter the percentage in Waste / overage %; the calculator multiplies the floor area by 1 + waste / 100 before dividing by box or roll coverage. It accepts 0 through 50.
How do I know how many flooring boxes to buy?
Enter the total area, waste percentage, and the product's coverage in Coverage per box / pack. The calculator divides the area with waste by that coverage and rounds up to a whole number of boxes.
Can I use this as a flooring roll calculator?
Yes. Choose Rolled flooring, then enter Roll width and Roll length. The two fields accept feet, inches, meters, or centimeters independently.
Does the flooring calculator look up prices?
No. It calculates from the values you enter and does not perform supplier or pricing lookups. The result is a quantity estimate, not certified flooring or purchasing advice.
