Gravel Calculator

Enter the area to cover, the fill depth, a gravel density, and a waste percentage to estimate the volume and weight of gravel you need. The formula, every assumption, and intermediate values are shown alongside the result.

The surface area to be covered with gravel.

Depth of the gravel layer, top to bottom.

Common reference points, not a lookup for your specific material. Confirm with your supplier.

Auto-filled from the type above, or select "Custom density" to edit it.

Extra material for spillage, settling, and irregular edges. Set to 0 to exclude.

How to calculate gravel volume and weight

Start with the surface area and planned layer depth. Gravel Calculator converts those values to square feet and feet, adds the waste percentage to the base volume, then uses the selected density to estimate weight. The result shows the converted inputs and intermediate values before you copy or download it.

How to use the gravel calculator

  1. Enter the covered surface in Area, then choose sq ft, sq yd, or sq m.
  2. Enter the layer thickness in Fill depth, then choose in, ft, cm, or mm.
  3. Choose a preset in Gravel type / density, or select Custom density and edit Density. A custom value can use lb/ft³ or kg/m³ through Density unit.
  4. Set Waste / overage % between 0 and 50. The starting value is 10.
  5. Select Calculate to produce the estimate. Select Reset to clear Area and restore the other starting values.

What the gravel volume calculator calculates

Area and depth are converted to square feet and feet before the volume calculation. The waste allowance is added after the base volume. When Density uses kg/m³, the calculator converts it to pounds per cubic foot for the weight calculation.

Area: 200 sq ft
Fill depth: 3 in
Gravel type / density: Crushed stone / gravel mix (~100 lb/ft³)
Waste / overage %: 10

Total volume: 55.00 cu ft (2.04 cu yd, 1.56 cu m)
Estimated weight: 5,500 lb (2.75 US tons, 2.49 metric tonnes)

The calculator applies Volume = Area x Depth, then Total volume (with waste) = Volume x (1 + Waste % / 100). It calculates weight with Weight = Total volume x Density. The result cards show gravel volume with waste, cubic feet, estimated weight in US short tons, and metric tonnes. The assumptions table lists converted inputs and intermediate values.

How gravel weight is estimated

Gravel type / density has presets for Pea gravel at about 95 lb/ft³, Crushed stone / gravel mix at about 100 lb/ft³, and Gravel with sand at about 105 lb/ft³. Select Custom density when a supplier gives you another figure, enter it in Density, and choose the matching Density unit.

The calculator accepts one area, one fill depth, one density, and one waste percentage. It rejects blank, non-numeric, non-finite, and zero-or-negative Area, Fill depth, or Density values. Waste / overage % accepts 0 through 50. The calculator does not retrieve live pricing, supplier availability, or site data, and its result is not certified engineering or purchasing advice.

What to do with the result

  • Enter an Area and Fill depth, then check the resulting volume and weight.
  • Compare two Gravel type / density choices for the same inputs, then copy the assumptions with Copy result.
  • Enter square meters, centimeters, and kg/m³, then save the plain-text estimate with Download result (.txt).

Frequently asked questions

How much gravel do I need for 200 sq ft at 3 inches?

At a density of 100 lb/ft³ and 10% waste, the estimate is 55.00 cubic feet, 2.04 cubic yards, 5,500 lb, 2.75 US tons, and 2.49 metric tonnes. The calculation starts with 200 sq ft multiplied by 3 inches converted to feet.

What density should I use for gravel?

Use the preset that matches the material, or enter a supplier figure through Custom density. The presets are 95, 100, and 105 lb/ft³, and the actual material value can vary.

Does the gravel calculator include waste?

Yes, Waste / overage % is added after the base volume, and it starts at 10%. Enter 0 to leave the base volume unchanged, or enter any allowed value through 50.

Can I calculate gravel in cubic yards and tons?

Yes, the result shows volume in cubic yards and cubic feet, plus estimated weight in US short tons and metric tonnes. The assumptions table also includes cubic meters and pounds.

Can I use square meters and kilograms per cubic meter?

Yes, choose sq m for Area, use cm or mm if needed for Fill depth, and select kg/m³ for a Custom density value. The calculator converts those inputs before applying the formulas.
