How to use the Topsoil Calculator
- Enter Area and choose sq ft, sq yd, or sq m.
- Enter Fill depth and choose in, ft, cm, or mm.
- Choose a value under Topsoil condition / density. Select Custom density to edit Density and its unit.
- Set Waste / overage %. It starts at 10 and accepts values from 0 to 50.
- Click Calculate. Reset clears Area, restores the starting values, and hides Result.
How the topsoil volume calculator applies waste
The calculation converts Area to square feet, Fill depth to feet, and Density to pounds per cubic foot. It multiplies area by depth, applies Waste / overage %, then converts the total for display.
Area: 200 sq ft
Fill depth: 4 in
Density: 75 lb/ft³
Waste / overage: 10%
Volume before waste: 66.67 cu ft
Total volume: 73.33 cu ft = 2.72 cu yd
Estimated weight: 2.75 US short tons
The formulas are Volume = Area x Depth, Total volume = Volume x (1 + Waste % / 100), and Weight = Total volume x Density.
What the topsoil weight calculator shows
After validation passes, the Result section shows topsoil volume with waste in cubic yards, cubic feet, and cubic meters. It also lists estimated weight in US short tons and metric tonnes, converted Area and Fill depth, Density used, volume before waste, the waste allowance, total volume, and the formula.
Copy result puts the plain-text summary on the clipboard when clipboard access succeeds. If copying fails, the page tells you to select and copy it manually. Download result (.txt) saves the same summary as topsoil-calculator-result.txt.
Topsoil Calculator inputs and units
- Area accepts sq ft, sq yd, or sq m.
- Fill depth accepts in, ft, cm, or mm and starts at 4 in.
- Topsoil condition / density starts at Average topsoil, which sets Density to 75 lb/ft³. The preset choices use 70, 75, 90, or 100 lb/ft³.
- Select Custom density to edit Density in lb/ft³ or kg/m³. Preset choices make the field read-only and set the unit to lb/ft³.
- Waste / overage % starts at 10 and accepts values from 0 to 50.
What the topsoil estimate does not model
Area, Fill depth, and Density must be numeric values greater than zero. Waste / overage % can be 0, but it cannot exceed 50. The calculation uses one area, one depth, one density, and the values you enter. It does not fetch pricing, supplier data, or site conditions, and it does not calculate settling.
Using the estimate for an order or quote
For a planting bed, measure the covered area, enter the planned Fill depth, choose a density reference, and adjust Waste / overage % before ordering material.
If a supplier gives density in kilograms per cubic meter, select Custom density, choose kg/m³, and enter that figure. The result converts it for the weight estimate.
For a quote or handoff, check the assumptions table, then click Copy result or Download result (.txt).
When another construction calculator fits better
Use the Construction Calculators category when the material or job changes. Choose the Gravel Calculator for gravel volume and weight, the Mulch Calculator for mulch volume and bag count, or the Concrete Calculator for slab or footing volume and bag count.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate how much topsoil I need?
Enter Area, Fill depth, Topsoil condition / density, and Waste / overage %, then click Calculate. The calculator multiplies area by depth, adds the selected overage, and applies Density to estimate weight.
What density should I enter for topsoil?
Choose the preset that matches your material, or select Custom density and enter the figure supplied for your topsoil. The presets are 70, 75, 90, and 100 lb/ft³, and the custom unit can be lb/ft³ or kg/m³.
How much waste should I add to a topsoil estimate?
Enter a Waste / overage % from 0 to 50; the starting value is 10. The percentage adds material to the calculated volume. The calculator does not calculate settling.
Can I calculate topsoil in square meters and kilograms?
Yes. Set Area to sq m, select Custom density, choose kg/m³, and enter positive values for Area, Fill depth, and Density. The result includes cubic yards, cubic feet, cubic meters, US short tons, and metric tonnes.
