How to enter values
Start with the area of the bed and the depth of the mulch layer. The result uses those values with the selected bag volume and waste percentage, then shows the converted inputs, intermediate totals, and assumptions used.
- Enter Bed area and choose
sq ft,sq yd, orsq m. - Enter Mulch depth and choose
in,ft,cm, ormm. - Choose Bag size. The presets are 1 cu ft bag, 2 cu ft bag, and 3 cu ft bag. Choose Custom bag size to edit the volume.
- Set Waste / overage % from 0 to 50, then click Calculate.
- Read the result, or select Copy result or Download result (.txt).
How volume and bags are calculated
Area is converted to square feet and depth to feet. The calculator multiplies those values, adds the waste percentage, converts the total to cubic yards and cubic meters, and divides by the bag volume. The displayed bag count rounds up to the next whole bag.
Area: 200 sq ft
Depth: 3 in
Waste / overage %: 10
Bag size: 2 cu ft bag
Volume before waste: 50.00 cu ft
Total volume: 55.00 cu ft
Bags needed: 28
The result includes the exact bag count before rounding, converted inputs, the waste allowance, and the assumptions table. The equations appear under Formula used.
What the inputs accept
- Bag size fills Bag volume (cu ft) with 1, 2, or 3. That field becomes editable after you choose Custom bag size.
- Waste / overage % starts at 10 and accepts 0 through 50. It adds an allowance for spillage, settling, and irregular bed edges.
- Bed area, Mulch depth, and Bag volume (cu ft) must be greater than zero. Blank, non-numeric, negative, and otherwise invalid values stop the calculation and show an error.
- There is one area and one depth input. Run separate calculations for beds with different measurements and combine the results yourself.
The calculation runs in the browser using the values you enter. The page does not request prices, supplier data, site conditions, density, delivery details, or bulk-versus-bag costs. The result is not certified landscaping or purchasing advice.
When another construction calculator fits
Use the Gravel Calculator when the material is gravel and you need volume and weight from area, depth, density, and waste. Use the Concrete Calculator for a slab or footing based on length, width, thickness, waste, and bag size.
Choose the Construction Materials Calculator when the project involves another material or construction mode. The full Construction Calculators category also covers dimensions, loads, solar estimates, and water volume.
Examples with one bed
- For several planting beds, run each area and depth separately, then add the bag counts.
- For a cubic-yard delivery estimate, enter the bed dimensions and compare the resulting volume with the delivery amount.
- When the product label gives a bag volume, choose Custom bag size and enter that number in Bag volume (cu ft).
Frequently asked questions
How many bags of mulch do I need for 200 square feet?
For 200 sq ft at 3 in, with 10% waste and 2 cu ft bags, the calculator returns 28 bags. The total after waste is 55 cu ft, so 27.5 bags rounds up to 28.
Can I use a custom mulch bag size?
Choose Custom bag size and enter the product volume in Bag volume (cu ft). The field stays read-only while a preset is selected.
What units does the mulch volume calculator accept?
Bed area accepts sq ft, sq yd, and sq m. Mulch depth accepts in, ft, cm, and mm, while bag volume is entered in cubic feet.
Why does the mulch calculator round bags up?
The displayed result represents whole bags, so the calculator rounds the exact count up. The assumptions table shows the exact count before rounding.
Does the mulch calculator use live prices?
No, it uses only the area, depth, bag volume, and waste percentage you enter. It does not retrieve pricing or supplier information.
