How to use the paver calculator
Start with the area and the paver dimensions. The calculator applies the selected laying pattern's starting waste percentage, then estimates base material and bedding sand from their own depths and densities. After calculation, the Result section shows the formulas, converted values, assumptions, and a text version you can copy or download.
- Enter Area to pave and choose
sq ft,sq yd, orsq m. - Enter Paver size (length x width) and choose
inorcm. - Choose Laying pattern, then check or edit Waste / cut-loss %.
- Enter Base depth and Bedding sand depth. A zero depth gives that layer a zero volume and weight.
- Choose a density preset for each material, or select Custom density to edit its density field and unit.
- Select Calculate. Select Reset to restore the starting values and clear the result.
How pattern waste changes the paver count
Laying pattern sets a starting value for Waste / cut-loss %: about 5% for Running bond or Stack bond / jack-on-jack, 8% for Basketweave, 12% for Herringbone, and 15% for Circular / fan / custom. Changing the pattern replaces the current waste value with its preset. You can then enter any value from 0 to 50.
Area to pave: 200 sq ft
Paver size: 12 x 6 in
Waste / cut-loss %: 5
Area with waste: 210 sq ft
Pavers needed: 420
The count uses ceil(Area with waste / Paver area), so the result is a whole paver count rounded up. Waste changes the paver count and its related area values. It does not increase the base material or bedding sand quantities.
How base material and sand are calculated
The calculator treats the base material and bedding sand as separate layers. For each one, it uses Volume = Area x Depth and Weight = Volume x Density. With 200 sq ft, a 4 in base at 100 lb/ft3 produces 2.47 cubic yards and 3.33 US tons. A 1 in sand layer at the same density produces 0.62 cubic yards and 0.83 US tons.
Units and result controls
- Area to pave accepts
sq ft,sq yd, orsq m. - Paver dimensions accept
inorcm. - Base and sand depths accept
in,ft,cm, ormm. - Base material and sand use separate density controls.
- Use Copy result or Download result (.txt) after Calculate.
- Density:
lb/ft³orkg/m³. Preset density fields are read-only; select Custom density to edit one. Selecting a non-custom preset resets its density unit tolb/ft³.
Inputs the calculator rejects or leaves out
Area and both paver dimensions must be greater than zero. Base and sand depths can be zero, while both densities must be greater than zero. Waste must be between 0 and 50. A blank, non-numeric, or out-of-range value stops the calculation and displays an error. The estimate uses one area and one rectangular or square paver size.
- The calculator does not model mixed paver sizes, border zones, excavation, fabric, edge restraints, drainage, delivery, supplier availability, or live pricing.
- Displayed values are rounded, while calculations use the converted values behind the result.
What the result can support
- Enter a patio area and a product's per-piece dimensions to get a whole-paver count.
- Compare the base and bedding sand quantities at the selected depths and densities.
- Copy the assumptions and formulas with the result for a takeoff note.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate paver count with waste?
The calculator finds each paver's area, multiplies the paved area by 1 plus the waste percentage, then divides and rounds up. For 200 sq ft, 12 x 6 in pavers, and 5% waste, the result is 420 pavers.
How much paver base and sand do I need?
Each layer uses area times depth for volume, then volume times the selected density for weight. Base material and bedding sand have separate depth and density inputs.
What units does the paver count calculator accept?
Area accepts sq ft, sq yd, and sq m. Paver dimensions accept in and cm. Layer depths accept in, ft, cm, and mm. Density accepts lb/ft3 and kg/m3.
Does the paver calculator include material prices?
No. It calculates from the values you enter and does not fetch live pricing, supplier data, or site conditions.
