How to use the Date Difference Calculator
Enter dates in Start date and End date. The calculator checks both fields before it calculates, then uses the earlier date first if the entries are reversed. The result shows the day count, full weeks, calendar breakdown, formula, and assumptions used.
Calculate days between two dates
- Enter valid dates in Start date and End date.
- Check Include end date when the end date should add one day to the total.
- Select Calculate difference to show the result, formula, and assumptions table.
- Select Copy result or Download result (.txt) to keep the plain-text result.
If a field is empty or invalid, the calculator shows "Enter a valid start date." or "Enter a valid end date." and keeps the result hidden. Select Reset to clear both fields and uncheck Include end date.
What the date difference result includes
Total days comes from subtracting the earlier date from the later date. Include end date adds one day to that total. Full weeks counts complete groups of seven days, while Calendar breakdown uses the actual month lengths between the dates.
Start date: 2023-01-01
End date: 2023-03-15
Include end date: No
Total days: 73
Calendar breakdown: 0 years, 2 months, 14 days
Full weeks: 10 (remainder 3 days)
- Include end date changes Total days, Full weeks, and the remainder. It does not change Calendar breakdown.
- Approximate months divide Total days by
30.436875, and approximate years divide it by365.2425. Both values are rounded to two decimal places. - If End date comes before Start date, the result says that the dates were swapped and uses the earlier date first.
When to include the end date
Leave Include end date unchecked for the gap between two dates. Check it when both boundary dates belong in the count, such as a stay counted by its arrival and departure dates. For the same date, the unchecked result is zero days. Checking the option makes Total days one, while Calendar breakdown remains zero years, zero months, zero days.
Where date differences come up
- A project lead can compare a planned start date with a delivery date, then copy Total days and Full weeks into a schedule.
- A person checking a lease or membership period can include the end date when both the first and last calendar day belong in the counted period.
- A records team can compare two dated entries and keep the Calendar breakdown when a result such as years, months, and days is easier to read than a day total.
Choose the right date calculator
Use the Date and Time Calculators category to find another date tool. Choose Business Days Calculator when weekends and a holiday list should affect the count. Choose Date Add Calculator to add or subtract days, weeks, months, or years from one date. Choose Countdown Calculator for time remaining until, or elapsed since, a target date and time in a selected time zone.
This calculator reads calendar dates only. It does not apply holidays, legal or institutional date rules, times of day, or time zones. The date calculation runs in the browser and sends no request containing the dates you enter.
Frequently asked questions
Does the calculator count the end date?
The default difference excludes the end date. Check Include end date to add one day to Total days, Full weeks, and the remainder.
How does the calculator show years, months, and days?
Calendar breakdown reports whole calendar years, then months, then remaining days using the actual month lengths between the earlier and later dates. Include end date does not change it.
Can I calculate the difference if End date is earlier?
The calculator swaps the dates for calculation when End date is earlier than Start date. The assumptions table and copied result state that the dates were swapped.
Does the date difference calculator use time zones?
It treats each input as a plain calendar date. It does not read a time of day or apply a time-zone offset.
