How credit card payoff time is calculated
The calculator applies your payment after adding monthly interest to the remaining balance. It reports months to pay off, total interest, total payments, the formula, assumptions, and intermediate values. In the last month, the payment is reduced to the remaining balance plus that month's interest.
How to use the credit card payoff calculator
- Enter an amount greater than 0 in Current card balance ($).
- Enter Annual percentage rate, APR (%) and Minimum payment per month ($).
- Leave Extra payment per month ($, optional) blank to use zero, or enter 0 or more.
- Click Calculate to show the payoff figures, formula, assumptions, and schedule.
- After a result appears, click Copy result or Download result (.txt). Click Reset to clear the fields.
How the payoff schedule is built
The annual percentage rate becomes a monthly rate with APR / 100 / 12. Each month, the calculator applies interest to the remaining balance, then sends the rest of the combined payment to principal.
Using the input examples, the first month is:
Balance: $5,000
APR: 22.99%
Minimum payment: $150
Extra payment: $50
First-month interest: $95.79
First-month principal: $104.21
Remaining balance after month 1: $4,895.79
The same calculation repeats until the balance reaches zero. The interest column is added to produce Total interest paid.
The result shows Months to pay off, Total interest paid, Total of all payments, and Total monthly payment used. The assumptions table includes the monthly periodic rate and first-month interest. The schedule has Month, Payment, Principal, Interest, and Remaining balance columns.

What an extra credit card payment changes
Extra payment per month ($, optional) is added to Minimum payment per month ($) each month. If the extra payment is greater than zero, the result also runs a minimum-only schedule when that payment exceeds first-month interest. It shows interest saved and time saved only when that comparison schedule pays off within 100 years. A blank field counts as zero.
Credit card payoff calculator limits
- Current card balance ($) and Minimum payment per month ($) must be greater than 0.
- Annual percentage rate, APR (%) must be between 0 and 100. When entered, Extra payment per month ($, optional) must be 0 or greater.
- Minimum payment per month ($) plus Extra payment per month ($, optional) must exceed first-month interest. Otherwise, the calculator displays an error because the balance does not shrink.
- The schedule must finish within 100 years. Money is displayed to two decimal places, while the calculation keeps more precision internally.
- The model uses a fixed APR and the same monthly payment until the final month. It does not model new purchases, cash advances, balance transfers, fees, promotional rates, penalty APRs, or missed payments.
What the schedule can show
- Enter a balance, APR, and minimum payment to see payoff time and interest for that payment plan.
- To compare $150 with $200 per month, enter $150 as Minimum payment per month ($) and $50 as Extra payment per month ($, optional).
- Download the monthly payment, principal, interest, and balance rows as text for review.

Frequently asked questions
How do I use a credit card payoff calculator?
Enter the balance, APR, minimum payment, and optional extra payment, then click Calculate. The result shows payoff time, interest, assumptions, and the schedule.
How is credit card payoff time calculated?
Credit card payoff time uses APR / 100 / 12 for monthly interest. The calculator applies payment after interest until the balance reaches zero, then sums interest.
What if my credit card payment does not cover interest?
The calculator shows an error when the minimum payment plus extra payment is less than or equal to first-month interest. Increase one payment amount before calculating again.
How does an extra payment change a credit card payoff schedule?
An extra payment raises the monthly amount applied after interest, which can reduce months and interest. The comparison shows interest saved and time saved only when the minimum-only schedule meets the conditions.
Does the credit card payoff calculator use my account data?
The credit card payoff calculator uses only the balance, APR, minimum payment, and extra payment you enter. It does not fetch live rates, card issuer records, credit data, or account data, and its result is not personalized financial advice.
