Debt-to-Income Ratio Calculator

Calculate your debt-to-income ratio (DTI) from your gross income and recurring monthly debt payments. See front-end and back-end DTI, a category breakdown, the formula, every assumption, and a copyable or downloadable result.

Income before taxes and other deductions.

Annual income is divided by 12 to get gross monthly income.

Category Monthly payment ($)

Include rent or mortgage, auto loans, student loans, minimum credit card payments, personal loans, and alimony or child support. Do not include groceries, utilities, subscriptions, or insurance unless they are a loan payment.

How to use the debt-to-income ratio calculator

Enter gross income and recurring monthly payments, then select Calculate to see gross monthly income, total debt, back-end DTI, and front-end DTI. Choose Monthly or Annual in Income period. Front-end DTI appears when the entered Housing (rent or mortgage) payments total more than zero.

Calculate DTI from income and debt payments

  1. Enter pre-tax income in Gross income ($), then choose Monthly or Annual in Income period.
  2. Use the two starting debt rows. The first starts with Housing (rent or mortgage).
  3. Choose a category, enter its Monthly payment ($), and select Add debt for another row.
  4. Select Calculate to show the ratios, assumptions, formula, and debt breakdown. Select Reset to clear the fields and restore the two starting rows.

How the debt-to-income ratio calculator calculates DTI

When Annual is selected, the calculator divides the entered income by 12 to get gross monthly income. Back-end DTI uses every entered payment above zero. Front-end DTI adds the positive payments in Housing (rent or mortgage) and compares that total with gross monthly income.

  • Gross monthly income = Annual income / 12 when Annual is selected.
  • Back-end DTI (%) = (Total recurring monthly debt / Gross monthly income) x 100
  • Front-end DTI (%) = (Housing payment / Gross monthly income) x 100
Gross income ($): 6000
Income period: Monthly
Housing (rent or mortgage): 350

Back-end DTI: 5.8%
Front-end DTI: 5.8%

What the DTI result includes

After you select Calculate, the result shows Gross monthly income, Total recurring monthly debt, and Back-end DTI (all debt). A positive housing total adds Front-end DTI (housing only). The debt breakdown combines rows with the same category, puts the largest totals first, and shows each category as a share of gross income. General reference ranges appear below it as informational guidance.

Copy result places the plain-text summary and category breakdown on the clipboard. Download result (.txt) saves the same text as a file.

What a DTI calculator leaves out

Enter recurring obligations such as rent or mortgage, auto loans, student loans, minimum credit card payments, personal loans, and alimony or child support. Leave out groceries, utilities, subscriptions, and insurance premiums unless an amount is part of a loan payment.

  • Blank rows are skipped, and rows with a payment of 0 are not counted.
  • Gross income must be greater than 0, gross monthly income must be at least $1, and at least one payment must be greater than 0.
  • You can add up to 15 debt rows. Entered payments must be 0 or greater.
  • The calculation uses only the numbers you enter. It does not access credit reports, live loan terms, external records, or lender rules.
  • The ratios are calculated in your browser from the values in the form.

The output is a mathematical calculation. It does not provide a lending decision or personalized financial advice.

Where this DTI calculator comes up

Enter housing, auto, and student-loan payments together when you need the housing-only ratio beside the ratio for all entered debt.

Add a proposed recurring payment, select Calculate again, and compare the new total with the earlier result.

Use Copy result or Download result (.txt) to keep the entered figures, formula, and category totals together.

When to use another financial calculator

Use the Financial Calculators category when you need a different kind of estimate. The Debt Payoff Calculator is the better choice for payoff order, payoff date, and interest across multiple debts. Choose the Credit Card Payoff Calculator for months to pay off a card and total interest from its balance, APR, minimum payment, and extra payment.
