Start with your monthly costs, choose an income stability option, and check the suggested Target months value. Add current savings or a planned contribution when you want the result to show the remaining amount or an estimated time to reach the target.
- Enter an amount greater than 0 in
Essential monthly expenses ($). - Choose
Stable,Variable, orUnstable, then review or editTarget months. - Enter
Current emergency savings ($)andPlanned monthly contribution ($), or leave either field blank. - Click
Calculate. - Read the target, amount still needed, progress display, assumptions table, and any time estimate.
How to calculate an emergency fund target
The calculator multiplies Essential monthly expenses ($) by Target months. It subtracts Current emergency savings ($) from that target and sets the remaining amount to zero when the savings cover the target. Choosing a stability option fills Target months with 3 for Stable, 6 for Variable, or 9 for Unstable, replacing the field's current value.
Monthly expenses entered: $2,800
Target months: 3
Current emergency savings: $1,500
Planned monthly contribution: $250
Emergency fund target: $8,400.00
Amount still needed: $6,900.00
Estimated time to reach target: 28 month(s)
The progress display divides current savings by the target and caps the percentage at 100. When the contribution is above zero, the time estimate divides the amount still needed by Planned monthly contribution ($) and rounds up to a whole month. The calculation does not include interest.
What the emergency fund contribution plan includes
A blank Current emergency savings ($) field counts as $0. A blank or zero Planned monthly contribution ($) field leaves out the time estimate. When savings meet or exceed the target, the result shows Target already met and Still needed is $0.
Enter recurring costs such as housing, utilities, food, insurance, transportation, and minimum debt payments. All figures are treated as monthly. The calculation uses the values you enter and does not adjust for changing expenses, changing contributions, interest, or costs left out of the expenses field.
When the Emergency Fund Calculator rejects an input
Essential monthly expenses ($) must be greater than 0. Target months must be greater than 0 and no more than 36. Entered savings and contribution amounts must be 0 or greater. If a check fails, the calculator hides the result and shows an error message until you correct the input.
What the sample values show

- Selecting
VariablefillsTarget monthswith 6, whileUnstablefills it with 9. - With $1,500 saved and a $250 monthly contribution, the $8,400 example shows 28 month(s) to reach the target.
