How to use the retirement income calculator
Set the ages, savings, contributions, return assumptions, inflation, and spending target, then click Calculate. The result separates the balance at retirement, Sustainable annual income (today's $), and the spending simulation through Plan to age (life expectancy). It also displays the assumptions and formulas used.
- Enter Current age, Planned retirement age, and Plan to age (life expectancy).
- Enter Current retirement savings ($) and Annual contribution until retirement ($).
- Enter Expected annual return before retirement (%), Expected annual return during retirement (%), and Expected annual inflation (%).
- Enter the desired retirement spending target in current dollars.
- Click Calculate to display the projection.
- Review the tables, then click Copy result or Download result (.txt).
How retirement income is calculated
Before retirement, the balance compounds once per year. Annual contribution until retirement ($) is added at the end of each year. During retirement, the calculator raises spending by Expected annual inflation (%), subtracts that year's amount at the start of the year, and applies Expected annual return during retirement (%) to the remaining balance.
Sustainable annual income (today's $) uses the projected retirement balance, the inflation-adjusted return, and the years between Planned retirement age and Plan to age (life expectancy). The desired spending target is tested in a separate year-by-year simulation.
Using the example values in the fields gives this result:
Inputs: age 35, retire at 65, plan to age 90
Savings $80,000, annual contribution $12,000
Returns 7% before retirement, 5% during retirement, inflation 3%
Desired spending $50,000
Projected balance at retirement: $1,742,509.84
Sustainable annual income (today's $): $36,519.71
Estimated depletion age at desired spending: 82
What the retirement projection shows
The result cards show Projected balance at retirement, Sustainable annual income (today's $), Desired annual spending (today's $), and either Surplus (today's $/yr) or Shortfall (today's $/yr). The outcome reports whether savings last through the planning age or the estimated age when the balance reaches zero.
The accumulation table lists Age, Years from now, and Projected balance. The retirement table lists Age, Annual spending (nominal), and Balance after withdrawal & growth. Its first row uses the age one year after Planned retirement age because the row records that year's withdrawal and growth. The page displays up to 40 accumulation rows and 60 retirement rows.
Questions the projection can test
- Compare Planned retirement age with Current retirement savings ($), Annual contribution until retirement ($), and the desired spending target.
- Change an age, contribution, return, or inflation input and inspect the resulting balance schedule.
- Set a spending target and Plan to age (life expectancy) to see the withdrawal path and estimated depletion age.

Validation, limits, and scope
Enter ages within these ranges: Current age 18–90, Planned retirement age 30–100, and Plan to age (life expectancy) 35–115. Planned retirement age must exceed current age, and plan-to age must exceed planned retirement age.
Current retirement savings ($), Annual contribution until retirement ($), and desired spending accept values up to 1e12. Annual contribution is required; desired spending must be greater than 0. Both return fields accept 0–30%, and inflation accepts 0–15%. Errors appear in the error area and hide the result.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does the retirement income calculator estimate sustainable income?
It applies an annuity-payment formula to the projected balance at retirement, the inflation-adjusted return, and the years in retirement. The result is reported as Sustainable annual income (today's $).
How does the retirement income calculator handle inflation?
It increases each simulated retirement withdrawal by Expected annual inflation (%). The desired spending target uses today's purchasing-power basis, then the schedule converts it to nominal spending for each withdrawal year.
What happens if my retirement savings run out?
The calculator sets the balance to zero when a simulated withdrawal exceeds it and reports the estimated depletion age. The outcome uses the age displayed for the row after withdrawal and growth.
Does the calculator use live market or account data?
The calculation uses the figures you enter. The page script makes no request for market rates, account balances, or external records.
