Savings & Retirement Calculator

Model a savings goal, an emergency-fund target, FIRE-style financial independence, or retirement withdrawals - all in one calculator. Enter current savings, contributions, expenses, income stability, inflation, and return assumptions to see year-by-year balances, the required contribution, a target date, and scenario sensitivity.

The balance already set aside toward this specific goal.

Enter your monthly amount. In savings-goal and emergency-fund modes it is added at each month-end; in FIRE and retirement-withdrawal modes it is converted to an annual contribution (monthly amount × 12) and added at year-end. Leave at 0 to solve for the contribution instead, where applicable.

A single nominal annual return, compounded monthly. Not fetched from any market data source.

Used to escalate the target/spending over time in goal, emergency-fund, and retirement-withdrawal modes. Not applied in FIRE mode.

Example: a down payment, a wedding, or a car, in today's purchasing power.

Only used when solving for the required contribution.

How to use the Savings & Retirement Calculator

Choose a mode, enter the shared savings and rate fields, then fill in the fields that appear for that mode. The result shows the target or projected balance, the assumptions used, a formula, and a year-by-year table when the calculation produces one.

  1. Select a value under Mode: Savings goal, Emergency fund, FIRE / financial independence, or Retirement withdrawals.
  2. Enter Current savings for this goal ($), Contribution ($ per month), Expected annual return (%), and Expected annual inflation (%).
  3. Complete the fields for the selected mode, including its target, ages, spending, or withdrawal assumptions.
  4. Click Calculate. Review the result, then choose Copy result or Download result (.txt) for the plain-text output.

How to calculate a savings goal

In Savings goal, enter Goal amount, today's $ ($) and choose an option under Solve for. The time calculation adds Contribution ($ per month) each month. The contribution calculation uses Target date - years from now, rounded to whole months. Both calculations increase the target with inflation and compound the balance monthly.

Current savings for this goal ($): 5000
Contribution ($ per month): 400
Expected annual return (%): 0
Expected annual inflation (%): 0
Goal amount, today's $ ($): 30000
Solve for: Time to reach the goal (from my contribution)
Output: Time to reach goal, 5 yrs 3 mo

How to calculate an emergency fund target

Emergency fund multiplies Monthly essential expenses ($) by Months of coverage target. Changing Income stability fills that field with 3, 6, or 9 months. Choose Custom - set months manually to enter another value between 1 and 24. The target rises with inflation, and the balance compounds monthly at the entered return.

How to estimate FIRE and retirement withdrawals

FIRE / financial independence divides Annual spending in FI ($) by Safe withdrawal rate (%) to find the FIRE number. The calculator turns Contribution ($ per month) into an annual contribution and adds it at year-end. It does not apply automatic inflation in this mode, and it checks up to 100 years.

Retirement withdrawals grows the balance to Planned retirement age, then subtracts an inflation-adjusted Desired annual withdrawal, today's $ ($) at the start of each retirement year. Planned retirement age must be greater than Current age. The drawdown table ends when the balance reaches zero or after 80 years. Expected annual return during retirement (%) applies after retirement.

What each result includes

  • Savings goal shows the target, time or required contribution, and a projected balance by year.
  • Emergency fund shows the coverage target, time to fully fund it, and a projected balance by year.
  • FIRE and Retirement withdrawals show the assumptions behind the target or drawdown, with sensitivity tables for return and, where used, inflation.

Savings goal checks up to 50 years, Emergency fund up to 30 years, and FIRE up to 100 years. Retirement withdrawals checks up to 80 retirement years. Sensitivity changes return or inflation assumptions; in Retirement withdrawals, a return scenario shifts both pre- and post-retirement returns. The model does not include taxes, Social Security, changing income or spending, market volatility, or sequence-of-return risk.

When another financial calculator fits better

Use Financial Calculators for loan, debt, pay, housing, or investment tasks outside these modes. Use the Savings Goal Calculator for one target date, the Emergency Fund Calculator for an emergency target and contribution plan, or the Retirement Income Calculator for sustainable annual retirement income from savings, contributions, age, spending, return, and inflation.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the monthly savings needed for a goal?

Choose Savings goal, select Required monthly contribution (from a target date) under Solve for, and enter Target date - years from now. The calculator solves for a level monthly contribution using your current savings, return, inflation, and target amount.

How many months of expenses should I enter for an emergency fund?

Income stability fills Months of coverage target with 3, 6, or 9 months. Choose Custom - set months manually when you want another value between 1 and 24.

Does the FIRE calculation adjust for inflation?

FIRE mode does not apply automatic inflation. It uses the annual spending and withdrawal rate you enter, so enter figures that match the basis you want to model.

How does the retirement withdrawal projection work?

It compounds savings annually until Planned retirement age, then withdraws the inflation-escalated annual amount at the start of each retirement year and applies the retirement return to the remaining balance. The projection can run for up to 80 retirement years.

Are my savings calculator inputs sent anywhere?

No. The calculation runs in browser JavaScript, and the page code makes no network request with your inputs. It does not fetch live rates, market data, account balances, or external records.
