Mixed Number Calculator

Calculate with mixed numbers, fractions, and whole numbers.

How to use the Mixed Number Calculator

Start by entering values in First number and Second number. Choose an operation in Operation, then click Calculate. The result area shows Improper fraction, Mixed number, and Decimal, followed by the calculation details in Steps.

  1. Enter a value in First number and another in Second number.
  2. Choose an operation in Operation.
  3. Click Calculate to produce the result.
  4. Read Improper fraction, Mixed number, Decimal, and the Steps list.
  5. Click Copy result or Download result (.txt) to keep the plain-text calculation.

Enter mixed numbers, fractions, or whole numbers

Both number fields accept a mixed number such as 1 3/4, a slash-form fraction such as 2/3 or 7/4, and a whole number such as 5. A leading plus or minus sign is accepted. Decimal input such as 2.5 is rejected.

In a mixed number, the fraction part must be greater than 0 and less than 1. The entry 2 5/4 is rejected, so enter the equivalent value as a slash-form fraction. A denominator of zero is rejected in either slash-form or mixed-number input.

How to add or subtract mixed numbers

For addition and subtraction, the Steps list shows each mixed-number conversion, the common denominator, the rewritten numerators, and the arithmetic. For example:

1 1/2 + 2 1/4
15/4 = 3 3/4 = 3.75

Read the exact fraction and decimal result

Improper fraction and Mixed number show exact forms of the calculated value. Decimal is generated from the same fraction. Repeating values can appear with parentheses, such as 0.(3). If the scan does not detect a repeating cycle, the decimal keeps up to eight digits and adds an ellipsis when more digits remain.

What the calculator rejects

A blank field, unsupported text, or a zero denominator produces an error. Division by zero is rejected when Second number is zero. Input errors identify the affected field and show the accepted formats when the text does not match them.

The calculator uses exactly two numbers in one calculation. Changing either number or Operation hides the current result until you click Calculate again. Reset clears both fields, sets Operation back to +, clears errors, and hides the result.

Check equivalent forms in Steps

A mixed number is converted before the arithmetic. For example, 1 1/2 becomes 3/2 in the conversion step, while an entry such as 9/4 is already a slash-form fraction. The Steps list shows these input descriptions and the later arithmetic together.

Copy result places the expression, result forms, and numbered steps in plain text. Download result (.txt) saves that same text as a file. The result text is built in your browser from the values you entered.

When to use a different math calculator

Use the Fraction Calculator for a single fraction or a chain of fractions and mixed numbers. Choose the Fraction and Ratio Calculator for ratios or direct and inverse proportions. For equation, geometry, sequence, matrix, vector, or number-theory work, browse Math Calculators.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add mixed numbers with different denominators?

Enter both mixed numbers, choose addition in Operation, and click Calculate. The Steps list shows the conversion to improper fractions, the common denominator, the numerator arithmetic, and the result forms.

Can I enter an improper fraction in the Mixed Number Calculator?

Yes, enter an improper fraction such as 7/4 in First number or Second number. The result can be shown as an improper fraction and as a mixed number.

Why is my decimal input rejected?

Decimal input is rejected because the fields accept mixed numbers, slash-form fractions, and whole numbers. Enter 2.5 as an equivalent fraction such as 5/2.

Does the Mixed Number Calculator round the result?

The fraction forms are exact. Decimal output can show a repeating cycle in parentheses. A cycle not detected during the scan can be shortened to eight digits and followed by an ellipsis.
