Use the two input modes
Choose Two points when you know both coordinates. Choose Rise and run when the vertical and horizontal changes are already known. After you select Calculate, the result shows the rise, run, formula steps, direction, and angle for a finite slope. Two points mode also shows the line equation. The calculation stays in the browser, and the result can be copied or downloaded as plain text.
- Select Two points or Rise and run.
- Choose a Unit for the coordinate labels.
- Enter values in the fields shown.
- Select Calculate.
- Select Copy result or Download result (.txt) for the plain-text output.
Calculate slope from two points
In Two points mode, enter x1, y1, x2, and y2. The calculator subtracts y1 from y2 to find the rise, then x1 from x2 to find the run. It applies m = (y2 - y1) / (x2 - x1). In Rise and run mode, it applies m = rise / run to the values in Rise (Δy) and Run (Δx).
Input: (x1, y1) = (1, 2), (x2, y2) = (4, 8)
Output: Rise = 6, Run = 3, Slope (m) = 2
Angle = 63.434949°, Line equation = y = 2x
A positive slope rises from left to right. A negative slope falls from left to right. A zero slope describes a horizontal line. For a finite slope, the result includes its direction and angle. In Two points mode, it also includes the line equation.
Read a zero-run result
A zero run with a nonzero rise produces a vertical line. The result labels the slope as Undefined and shows the rise, run, and line type. It does not show an angle or line equation for that case. Two identical points are rejected because they do not define a line. Rise and run values of 0 and 0 are also rejected.
Choose an input mode for the values you have
- Use Two points for coordinates such as (1, 2) and (4, 8). The result shows the subtraction used for rise and run.
- Use Rise and run when the vertical change and horizontal change are already available.
- Use Copy result for plain text, or Download result (.txt) to save the calculated output as a text file.
Input limits and coordinate units
Each required field must contain a valid decimal number. Empty or invalid values are rejected. The calculator also rejects values whose absolute magnitude is greater than 1e12, and it rejects a result when the slope is not finite. Coordinates can be positive, negative, or zero.
Unit labels the coordinates as Unitless (plain coordinates), Millimeters (mm), Centimeters (cm), Meters (m), Kilometers (km), Inches (in), Feet (ft), Yards (yd), or Miles (mi). It labels the values only. It does not convert them, and the slope has no attached unit.
Pick another math calculator
Use Math Calculators for other equation and geometry tasks. Use Distance Formula Calculator for the straight-line distance between coordinate points in 2D or 3D. Use Linear Equation Calculator to solve a one-variable linear equation.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate slope from two points?
Enter values in x1, y1, x2, and y2, then select Calculate. The calculator finds the rise and run, divides rise by run, and shows the steps.
How do I use the rise over run calculator?
Select Rise and run. Enter the vertical change in Rise (Δy) and the horizontal change in Run (Δx), then select Calculate. The result uses m = rise / run.
What does a zero run mean in a slope calculator?
A zero run with a nonzero rise makes the line vertical. The result reports the slope as Undefined, along with the rise, run, and line type. It does not show an angle or line equation.
Does the Unit setting convert my coordinates?
The Unit setting labels the coordinates. It does not convert their values, and the slope remains a ratio with no attached unit.
