How to use the Density Calculator
Select the quantity you need under Solve for. Density uses Mass (m) and Volume (V); Mass uses Density (ρ) and Volume (V); Volume uses Mass (m) and Density (ρ). Choose a unit for each field, then click Calculate. The result shows converted values, the formula, each calculation step, and controls for Copy result and Download result (.txt).
- Choose Density, Mass, or Volume under Solve for.
- Enter the two known quantities and choose the unit for each one.
- Click Calculate to show the result and Formula & steps.
- Click Copy result or Download result (.txt) after the result appears.
- Click Reset to clear the fields and restore the default selections.
Density calculator formulas and examples
The calculator applies ρ = m / V for density, m = ρ × V for mass, and V = m / ρ for volume. It converts mass to kilograms, volume to cubic meters, and a known density to kilograms per cubic meter before the calculation. For example, 10 kg divided by 2 m³ gives a density of 5 kg/m³.
Mass (m): 10 kg
Volume (V): 2 m³
Density: 5 kg/m³
A Density result also appears in g/cm³ and lb/ft³. A Mass result appears in kg, g, and lb. A Volume result appears in m³, L, and ft³. The calculator performs the arithmetic in the browser.
What units does the density calculator support?
For Mass (m), choose Kilograms (kg), Grams (g), Milligrams (mg), Pounds (lb), or Ounces (oz). For Volume (V), choose Cubic meters (m³), Cubic centimeters (cm³), Cubic millimeters (mm³), Liters (L), Milliliters (mL), Cubic feet (ft³), or Cubic inches (in³). For a known Density (ρ), choose kg/m³, g/cm³, or lb/ft³.
What inputs does the density calculator accept?
Each required value must be greater than zero and no greater than 1e15. The calculator rejects empty fields, negative numbers, zero, non-numeric text, and values written in exponent notation such as 1e3. It also rejects a calculation that produces a non-finite result. The calculator does not look up a material's density, so enter Density (ρ) yourself when solving for Mass or Volume.
Choose the unknown quantity
To check a density exercise, choose Density and enter Mass (m) and Volume (V). The displayed formula and steps show how the result was calculated. If your measurements use grams or milliliters, select those units before calculating.
For a mass calculation, choose Mass and enter Density (ρ) and Volume (V). For a volume calculation, choose Volume and enter Mass (m) and Density (ρ). Copy result keeps the displayed values and steps together in plain text.
When to use another science calculator
Use Science Calculators for physics, chemistry, electrical, optics, wave, fluid, gas, or radioactive-decay calculations. Choose Acceleration Calculator for a change in velocity and elapsed time, or Pressure Calculator for force divided by area. Choose Chemistry Calculator for pH, molarity, dilution, molar mass, stoichiometry, or specific heat.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate density from mass and volume?
Choose Density, enter Mass (m) and Volume (V), then click Calculate. The calculator converts the inputs to kilograms and cubic meters before applying ρ = m / V.
Can I calculate mass or volume with this calculator?
Yes. Choose Mass or Volume under Solve for, enter the other two known values, and click Calculate. The result includes the selected formula and its calculation steps.
Why is my density calculator input rejected?
Input is rejected when a field is empty, non-numeric, zero, negative, greater than 1e15, or written with exponent notation. Enter a finite number greater than zero in each required field.
Does the density calculator look up material density?
No. It does not look up or infer a material property. Enter Density (ρ) yourself when solving for Mass or Volume.
Can I copy or download the density result?
Yes. After a successful calculation, click Copy result or Download result (.txt). If copying fails, the result text remains available for manual selection and copying.
