Kinetic Energy Calculator

Calculate kinetic energy from mass and speed using KE = ½mv². See the formula, every intermediate value, and a copyable, downloadable result.

Mass must be a positive number greater than zero. Speed must be zero or a positive number.

How to use the kinetic energy calculator

Enter a positive value in Mass (m) and a zero-or-positive value in Speed (v). Choose Mass unit and Speed unit, then select Calculate. The result shows converted values, speed squared, the formula, and the final energy. For 10 kg and 20 m/s, it calculates 2000 J.

  1. Enter the object's mass in Mass (m).
  2. Choose its unit in Mass unit, then enter the object's speed in Speed (v).
  3. Choose the speed unit in Speed unit and select Calculate.
  4. Read the result and steps, then select Copy result, Download result (.txt), or Reset.

Kinetic energy formula and a worked example

The calculator converts mass to kilograms and speed to meters per second before applying KE = 1/2 x m x v^2. At 20 m/s, the squared speed is 400 m^2/s^2. With a mass of 10 kg, the result is 2000 J.

Mass (m): 10 kg
Speed (v): 20 m/s
KE = 1/2 x 10 x 20^2 = 2000 J

What units does the kinetic energy calculator support?

In Mass unit, choose Kilograms (kg), Grams (g), Pounds (lb), Slugs, or Metric tons (t). In Speed unit, choose Meters per second (m/s), Kilometers per hour (km/h), Miles per hour (mph), Feet per second (ft/s), or Knots. The visible result cards show joules, kilojoules, kilocalories, foot-pounds, kilowatt-hours, and BTU. The copied and downloaded text also includes calories.

Kinetic energy calculator input limits

Mass must be greater than zero. Speed may be zero or positive, and zero speed gives zero kinetic energy. Empty fields, invalid number text, scientific notation, negative speed, and values whose absolute value is above 1e12 produce an error. Changing an input or unit selector hides the current result until you select Calculate again.

What the result includes

  • The result cards show Kinetic energy in joules, plus values in kJ, kcal, ft-lb, kWh, and BTU.
  • The copyable text includes calories, the selected inputs, unit conversions when needed, the formula, and each calculation step.
  • Copy result sends the text to the clipboard when copying succeeds. Download result (.txt) saves it as a text file, while Reset clears the input fields, restores the default units, and hides the result section.

Choose the right science calculator

The Science Calculators category includes other physics calculations. Use the Force Calculator for force from mass and acceleration, the Acceleration Calculator for a change in velocity and elapsed time, or the Momentum Calculator for linear momentum from mass and velocity.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate kinetic energy from mass and speed?

Enter a positive mass and a zero-or-positive speed, choose Mass unit and Speed unit, and select Calculate. The calculator converts the values to kilograms and meters per second, then applies KE = 1/2 x m x v^2.

What does KE = 1/2mv^2 mean?

It means kinetic energy equals one half multiplied by mass and speed squared. The formula used here is the classical, non-relativistic model.

What mass and speed units can I enter?

You can enter Kilograms (kg), Grams (g), Pounds (lb), Slugs, or Metric tons (t) for mass, and Meters per second (m/s), Kilometers per hour (km/h), Miles per hour (mph), Feet per second (ft/s), or Knots for speed.

Can I enter zero or negative speed?

Zero speed is accepted and produces zero kinetic energy. Negative speed is rejected, and mass must be greater than zero.

Does the kinetic energy calculator include relativistic effects?

No. It applies the classical formula and does not calculate relativistic or rotational kinetic energy.
