Momentum Calculator

Calculate linear momentum from mass and velocity using p = mv. See the formula, every intermediate value, and a copyable, downloadable result.

Mass must be a positive number greater than zero. Velocity may be positive, negative, or zero.

How to calculate momentum with the Momentum Calculator

Enter Mass (m) and Velocity (v), choose Mass unit and Velocity unit, then select Calculate. The result shows the momentum formula, conversions to kilograms and meters per second when needed, and four momentum values. Copy result and Download result (.txt) use the displayed result.

  1. Enter a positive value in Mass (m) and any signed value in Velocity (v).
  2. Choose Mass unit and Velocity unit from the available options.
  3. Select Calculate to display the momentum, conversions, and formula steps.
  4. After the result appears, select Copy result or Download result (.txt).

What units does the Momentum Calculator support?

Mass unit includes Kilograms (kg), Grams (g), Pounds (lb), Slugs, and Metric tons (t). Velocity unit includes Meters per second (m/s), Kilometers per hour (km/h), Miles per hour (mph), and Feet per second (ft/s). The calculator converts both entries to kg and m/s before multiplying.

With Mass (m) set to 4 Kilograms (kg) and Velocity (v) set to 3 Meters per second (m/s), the result is:

Momentum: 12 kg·m/s
Momentum: 8.063628 lb·ft/s
Momentum: 2.697707 slug·ft/s
Momentum: 1200000 g·cm/s

Formula & steps lists the supplied values, conversions when needed, the formula, and the multiplication.

What input does the momentum formula accept?

Both fields are required. Mass must be greater than zero; Velocity may be positive, negative, or zero. The parser accepts signed decimal notation such as -12.5 and 20. Exponential notation, a leading plus sign, comma-separated values, and other non-decimal text are rejected.

Each value must have an absolute value no greater than 1e12. The calculator also rejects a non-finite momentum. Change an input or unit and the previous result is hidden until you select Calculate again.

What the Momentum Calculator does not calculate

The calculator applies p = m × v to one mass and one velocity. It does not infer a missing value, resolve 2D or 3D vector components, or model collisions, impulse, or momentum conservation between multiple objects. A negative Velocity produces a negative momentum.

The calculation script processes the entered mass and velocity in the browser and does not transmit them. Copy result and Download result (.txt) use the result already shown on the page.

Where momentum calculations come up

For a mechanics exercise, enter the mass and velocity, review Formula & steps, and copy the plain-text result into notes. A lab record using pounds and miles per hour can keep those entries while the result shows converted momentum values.

Use a negative Velocity when the chosen positive direction points opposite to the motion. The negative sign remains in the momentum result and calculation steps.

Frequently asked questions

What formula does the Momentum Calculator use?

The Momentum Calculator uses p = m × v. Momentum equals mass multiplied by velocity.

How do I calculate momentum in kg·m/s?

Enter Mass (m) in Kilograms (kg), enter Velocity (v) in Meters per second (m/s), and select Calculate.

Can I enter a negative velocity in the Momentum Calculator?

Yes, Velocity can be negative, and the result keeps that negative sign. Mass must still be greater than zero.

Does the Momentum Calculator calculate collisions?

It calculates momentum for the mass and Velocity you provide. It does not model collisions, impulse, or momentum conservation between multiple objects.
