How to calculate WHIP with the Baseball WHIP Calculator
Enter walks allowed, hits allowed, and innings pitched as full innings plus recorded outs. After you click Calculate, the calculator converts the outs, applies WHIP = (walks + hits) / innings pitched, and shows the values used. You can then copy or download the plain-text result.
- Enter a whole number in Walks allowed.
- Enter a whole number in Hits allowed.
- Enter full innings in Full innings pitched.
- Select 0, 1, or 2 in Extra outs (0, 1, or 2).
- Click Calculate, then review the formula or use Copy result or Download result (.txt).
How the WHIP formula handles innings pitched
The calculator keeps full innings and partial-inning outs in separate fields. Entering 6 with 1 extra out represents 19 recorded outs, while 6 with 2 extra outs represents 20. It divides total outs by 3 before calculating WHIP.
For example, 30 full innings with 10 walks and 20 hits produces 30 walks plus hits, 30.0000 decimal innings, and a WHIP of 1.000.
Walks allowed: 10
Hits allowed: 20
Full innings pitched: 30
Extra outs (0, 1, or 2): 0
Walks + hits: 30
Innings pitched: 30.0000
WHIP: 1.000
What inputs does the Baseball WHIP Calculator accept?
Enter the walk and hit totals from your source. The calculator uses the innings entry as full innings plus 0, 1, or 2 recorded outs, then converts those outs before calculating WHIP.
Walks allowed, Hits allowed, and Full innings pitched must each be whole numbers of 0 or more. Extra outs (0, 1, or 2) accepts only 0, 1, or 2. The innings total must contain at least one out, so zero full innings with zero extra outs stops the calculation.
Blank, negative, decimal, or otherwise invalid entries show an error and hide the result. The calculator uses the walk and hit totals you enter; it does not decide whether intentional walks or hit batsmen belong in those totals.
What the result includes
- WHIP, shown to three decimal places.
- Innings pitched in baseball notation and as decimal innings to four decimal places.
- An assumptions table with the entered values, total outs, walks plus hits, and the calculation values used for WHIP.

Copy result places the result summary on the clipboard. Download result (.txt) saves that summary as a text file. If copying fails, the page tells you to select the result and copy it manually.
What the Baseball WHIP Calculator does not do
The calculator uses only the walks, hits, and innings pitched you enter. It does not fetch player, team, or league records, apply a specific league's rules, or decide which events belong in your walk total.
When to use another baseball calculator
Use the Baseball ERA Calculator for earned run average from earned runs and innings pitched. Use the Baseball Statistics Calculator when you need WHIP alongside batting average, slugging percentage, or ERA. The Sports Calculators category covers the other listed sports and training calculations.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate WHIP from walks and hits?
Divide walks plus hits by innings pitched after converting the extra outs into decimal innings. The result shows the formula, baserunner total, decimal innings, and WHIP to three decimal places.
How should I enter 6.1 innings pitched?
Enter 6 in Full innings pitched and select 1 in Extra outs (0, 1, or 2). The calculator treats that as 19 outs, or 6.3333 decimal innings.
Can I enter decimal innings in Full innings pitched?
No. Full innings pitched must be a whole number, and the partial inning belongs in Extra outs (0, 1, or 2). A non-whole value such as 6.1 is rejected by the input validation.
Does the WHIP calculator pull player or league records?
No. It calculates only from the walks, hits, and innings pitched you enter, without fetching player, team, or league records.
