Excel Cleaner

Paste a table or upload an Excel workbook, choose which sheets to clean, and repair structural noise - stray whitespace, blank or separator rows/columns, simple import artifacts - without breaking formulas, headers, merged cells, or cell types. Everything runs locally in your browser.

How to clean Excel workbooks

Load an XLSX, XLS, or XLSM file, or paste cells from a table. Excel Cleaner lets you choose sheets and cleanup options, then updates selected text, removes eligible blank or separator rows and columns, shows a per-sheet preview, and exports the result as .xlsx. Sheets with formulas keep their row and column structure.

Steps to clean selected workbook sheets

  1. Drop an Excel workbook here or click browse files. If you have copied cells instead, paste them into Pasted Excel table.
  2. Select sheets under Sheets to clean. When a workbook has several sheets, Select all and Select none set the whole picker.
  3. Choose the checkboxes for the cleanup you need, such as Trim leading/trailing whitespace or Remove fully blank rows.
  4. Processing starts automatically after the input, sheet selection, or options change. Check the counts, Warnings, and Preview of cleaned sheets.
  5. Click Export .xlsx to download the cleaned workbook.

What the Excel Cleaner changes

The text options work on string cells and leave formula cells alone. Trim leading/trailing whitespace removes spaces at the edges. Collapse repeated internal spaces changes runs of spaces inside text to one space. Repair import noise changes non-breaking spaces, zero-width characters, tabs, and newlines to ordinary spaces. The blank-row and separator-row/column options inspect cell values after trimming.

Name	Num Of Assets
 Missionary UpClose 5
----

With Trim leading/trailing whitespace, Repair import noise, and Remove separator-only rows (e.g. ----, ====) selected, the example becomes:

Name	Num Of Assets
Missionary UpClose	5

A separator row or column must contain only two or more separator characters, such as hyphens or equals signs, in its non-empty cells. A fully blank column is removed only when Remove fully blank columns is selected. Remove separator-only columns follows the same check.

How pasted Excel tables are read

Pasted text becomes one sheet named Pasted data. The parser uses tabs when the text contains a tab; otherwise it uses commas. A quoted field can contain the delimiter, and two quotation marks inside a quoted field become one. An empty paste or a paste with no non-space cell leaves the cleanup area hidden.

Workbook files are read with the browser's local file reader, and this page does not post their contents. A file with an unsupported signature or no usable sheets cannot be processed. The page shows Could not read this file. when file reading fails.

Excel Cleaner rules for formulas and merged cells

Formula cells are skipped during text cleanup. If a selected sheet contains any formula, Excel Cleaner skips every blank and separator row or column removal for that sheet. The warning names the sheet, while text cleanup still runs on eligible string cells.

Rows and columns that participate in a merged range stay in place during structural cleanup. Row removal starts after the first row of the used range, so that row remains even when it looks blank or contains only separator characters. The preview shows up to 50 output rows and labels visible columns as Col 1, Col 2, and so on.

When to use Excel Cleaner

  • A reporting workbook has copied spaces around names and asset counts. Select the relevant sheets, run the text options, and inspect the preview before exporting.
  • An operations sheet uses separator rows between sections. Remove separator-only rows while retaining the first used-range row and any rows or columns in merged ranges.
  • A workbook has formulas alongside imported text. Clean eligible text cells while the formula-containing sheet keeps its original row and column structure.

Excel Cleaner or CSV & TSV Cleaner?

Use Excel Cleaner when the input is a workbook and sheet selection, formulas, or merged cells affect the cleanup. For plain delimited text that needs parsing and output settings, use CSV & TSV Cleaner. Both pages are listed under Spreadsheet Clean Tools. Excel Cleaner exports the workbook as .xlsx.

Frequently asked questions

Can Excel Cleaner remove blank rows?

Yes. Select Remove fully blank rows, and eligible blank rows after the first used-range row are removed. Rows in merged ranges stay in place. Formula-containing sheets skip structural removal.

Does Excel Cleaner change formulas?

No. Formula cells are skipped during text cleanup, and a sheet containing any formula skips blank and separator row or column removal.

Can I clean pasted Excel data?

Yes. Paste tab-delimited or comma-delimited cells into Pasted Excel table, then choose the cleanup options and inspect the Pasted data preview.

Does Excel Cleaner preserve macros in XLSM files?

The export is always an .xlsx file. This page does not state that VBA or macros from an .xlsm input are preserved.
