Archive Extractor

Preview the entries inside a ZIP, TAR, GZIP/TAR.GZ or 7Z archive, pick exactly which ones you want, and download the result as a new ZIP - all locally in your browser.

This is a selective extraction tool, not a repair, merge, cleanup or malware-scanning tool. It extracts exactly the entries you select into a new ZIP - it doesn't fix damaged archives, combine multiple archives, strip junk files, or scan content for threats. For read-only structural analysis, see Archive Inspector; for removing OS clutter from a ZIP, see ZIP Junk File Cleaner.

Choose files inside an archive

Load one ZIP, TAR, GZIP/TAR.GZ, or 7Z archive and inspect its entries before you build a download. The table shows paths, types, sizes, flags, and statuses, so you can leave blocked entries out and choose only the files you need. Archive Extractor reads the source in your browser, then creates a separate ZIP in memory.

  1. Drop one archive into the drop zone or choose browse file. The page reads one archive at a time.
  2. Check Archive entries, then use Search entries or the filters to narrow the table.
  3. Add an Include pattern or Exclude pattern, then set Pattern scope to file name or full path.
  4. Select files one by one, choose Select all eligible, or use Clear selection to start over.
  5. Fix any blocking message, choose Extract, then use Download ZIP or Download manifest.

Read the archive entries table

Archive entries keeps directory rows in the list, but only eligible files have selectable checkboxes. Search entries matches text in each path and leaves your selection unchanged. The filter buttons show Selected, Files, Directories, Password-protected, Unsafe path, Duplicate, Unsupported, or Malformed rows. Reset filters clears the search and active filters.

Filter files with include and exclude patterns

An include pattern makes only matching entries selectable. An exclude pattern removes matching entries from selection, including entries that also match an include pattern. Patterns use * for any number of characters and ? for one character. A full-path pattern must contain a slash, such as __MACOSX/*.

Include pattern: *.pdf
Pattern scope: Match file name
Result: only matching entries remain selectable

Use Match file name to match the last part of each path. Use Match full path to include a folder or other path text. Each pattern needs at least one literal character in addition to * or ?.

Formats and compression methods

ZIP and TAR archives can be listed and extracted. A plain GZIP becomes one file after decompression. TAR.GZ and TGZ are decompressed first, then read as TAR archives. For 7Z, Archive Extractor reads raw headers and file data stored with the 7-Zip Copy method. Compressed headers and methods such as LZMA or LZMA2 are marked unsupported. GZIP also requires the browser's DecompressionStream API.

When an entry cannot be extracted

Archive Extractor blocks absolute paths, drive-letter paths, and paths containing ... It also blocks a selection when two entries would produce the same output path, when no eligible file is selected, or when the uncompressed total exceeds 1.5 GB. A single entry can be up to 750 MB uncompressed, and the list stops at 50,000 entries.

Password-protected, malformed, and unsupported entries show flags or statuses in the table and cannot be selected. ZIP64 sizes and offsets beyond 32-bit values are read on a best-effort basis. The selected data stays in memory while the new ZIP is built, and the source archive is not changed.

Examples of selective extraction

  • A ZIP contains documents beside temporary files. Add *.pdf as an include pattern, select the matching files, and download them as one ZIP.
  • A TAR archive contains several folders. Search the paths, select the files from one folder, and keep their safe relative paths in the downloaded ZIP.
  • You need a record of the selection. Review the flags and statuses, then use Download manifest to save the selected paths and any extraction failures.

What Archive Extractor leaves out

Archive Extractor packages the files you select as one new ZIP. The Archive Extract Tools category covers other archive extraction jobs; this page checks entries and builds a selected download. It does not repair archives, merge archives, remove OS-generated ZIP clutter, or scan file content for malware.

Frequently asked questions

How do I extract selected files from a ZIP?

Load the ZIP, select eligible files in Archive entries, choose Extract, and select Download ZIP. The ZIP keeps each selected entry at its safe relative path.

Can I extract files from TAR.GZ or 7Z?

Yes. TAR.GZ and TGZ are decompressed and read as TAR archives. 7Z works with raw headers and Copy-method file data; compressed 7Z methods such as LZMA and LZMA2 are unsupported.

Why is an archive entry unavailable to select?

The checkbox is unavailable for a directory, a password-protected, malformed, unsupported, or unsafe entry, an entry larger than 750 MB uncompressed, or an entry excluded by a pattern. The table shows the matching flag or status.

Does Archive Extractor upload the archive?

No. Archive Extractor reads and processes the archive in your browser. The source file is never uploaded or written back; only the ZIP or manifest you choose to download leaves the page.
