How to remove background noise from audio
Audio Cleaner reads selected files in the browser and creates a new 16-bit PCM WAV file. Choose the filters, click Clean, then compare Original and Cleaned with playback, the waveform, and the spectrogram before downloading.

What the hum and hiss controls change
Remove mains hum applies notch filters at the selected frequency and four harmonics. Reduce steady hiss/noise floor uses spectral subtraction against the noise profile. Strength changes the hiss reduction and room-echo gate; it does not change the hum filter settings.
Input: selected audio file
Settings: Strength 40%, Remove mains hum, 60 Hz (US), Reduce steady hiss/noise floor
Output: 16-bit PCM WAV, -cleaned.wav suffix
How the noise profile is chosen
The automatic profile uses the quietest 0.4 seconds of the decoded audio. When the file is shorter than that window, the available audio is used. To keep speech out of the sample, drag across a noise-only part of the waveform, click Use waveform selection, and then click Clean.
Click Clear (use auto) to return to automatic profiling. A manual selection belongs to the current queued file, so each other file uses its own selection or automatic profile. Click the waveform or spectrogram to seek.
What room echo reduction changes
Reduce room echo/reverb tail is off by default. It uses a spectral gate on decaying reflections and can dull transients, so compare Original with Cleaned before downloading. The warning area reports speech-band loss, clipping, and high-frequency artifacts when the processed signal meets those checks.
The filters target steady repeating noise. They do not separate stems or voices, and they cannot remove a foreground sound such as traffic, a barking dog, or another speaker. If the browser cannot decode a file, Audio Cleaner skips it and names it in the decode message.
Cleaning choices for common recordings
- For mains hum, choose the matching option under
Hum frequencyand compare the two playback modes. - For steady hiss, keep the automatic profile or select a noise-only waveform region, then check the speech warning after cleaning.
- For room reflections, turn on
Reduce room echo/reverb tailand listen for dulled transients inCleaned.
When another audio edit tool fits better
Audio Edit Tools is the parent category for other direct changes to a local audio file. Choose Audio Effects Editor for pitch, tempo, fades, reverse playback, or a selected-range effect. Choose Trim Audio for a start and end cut, or Volume Normalizer for loudness and true-peak measurements before export.
Frequently asked questions
Can I remove background noise from audio without uploading it?
Yes. Audio Cleaner reads and processes the selected files with browser APIs. The code does not upload them.
How do I remove hum from an audio file?
Enable Remove mains hum, choose 50 Hz (EU/UK) or 60 Hz (US), and click Clean.
How do I reduce hiss in a recording?
Enable Reduce steady hiss/noise floor, set Strength, and listen to Original and Cleaned before downloading.
Can I clean several audio files at once?
Yes. Add multiple files to the queue. Audio Cleaner processes them with the current filter settings, then Download all (ZIP) packages multiple cleaned results together.
What format is the cleaned audio download?
Each cleaned result is a new 16-bit PCM WAV file with a -cleaned.wav suffix. A batch can also be downloaded as a ZIP.
