Remove BOM (Byte Order Mark)

Detect and remove the UTF-8 Byte Order Mark (BOM) from text or files.

How to remove BOM from text

Paste text into Input text or choose Upload for a text file. Remove BOM checks the first character for the invisible U+FEFF Byte Order Mark and removes it when present. The remaining text appears in BOM-free output, where you can select Copy or Download. The check covers the first character only.

Steps to remove a UTF-8 BOM

  1. Paste text into Input text, or select Upload to choose a text file.
  2. Review the cleaned value in BOM-free output.
  3. Select Copy to place the result on your clipboard, or select Download to save it.

What a UTF-8 BOM remover changes

Remove BOM reads the first character. When it is U+FEFF, the tool removes that one character and keeps the rest of the input in place. The marker is invisible in ordinary text, so this example writes it as [U+FEFF]:

Input: [U+FEFF]name,email
Output: name,email

Line breaks, spaces, punctuation, and other characters after the first position remain in the output. A BOM later in the text also remains.

Which files can you upload?

Select Upload and choose a .txt, .csv, .log, or .md file. The page also accepts text/plain files. The uploaded text is placed in Input text, where the same first-character check applies.

What happens when the input has no leading BOM?

Text without a leading U+FEFF returns unchanged. Empty input produces an empty output. If the input contains only a BOM, the output is empty, while Copy and Download remain available because the source contains one character.

What to do with the cleaned text

Review the result in BOM-free output. Select Copy to place it on your clipboard, or select Download to save the cleaned text as a file. The output contains the original text after the leading-character check.

Which text cleanup tool should you use?

Choose Remove BOM when the unwanted character is a leading U+FEFF. For other cleanup jobs, see Text Cleanup & Filter Tools. Use Remove Non-Printable Characters for non-printable characters generally, or choose Remove Special Characters when you need to choose which spaces, newlines, numbers, or extra characters to keep. Trim Whitespace handles leading, trailing, or repeated spaces.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove a UTF-8 BOM from text?

Paste the text into Input text, then review BOM-free output. Remove BOM deletes one leading U+FEFF character and leaves the rest unchanged.

What does Remove BOM do to text without a BOM?

It returns text without a leading BOM unchanged. The tool checks only the first character.

Can I remove a BOM from a .txt or .csv file?

Select Upload and choose a .txt or .csv file. The page also accepts .log, .md, and text/plain files.

Does Remove BOM delete every BOM in a file?

No. It removes one U+FEFF only when that character is first; a later BOM remains in the output.
