How to use Extract Text Between Delimiters
Start with the text that contains the values you need. Paste it into Input text, or load a supported text file, then choose the marks around those values. Each completed match appears on its own output line.
- Paste content into
Input text, or selectUploadfor a.txt,.csv,.json,.log, or.mdfile. - Enable the preset labels that match your text, such as
Double,Brackets, orParentheses. - Fill in both
Custom startandCustom endwhen your markers are not listed. - Choose a
Nesting policyand anUnmatched delimiterssetting. - Set the output checkboxes, then select
CopyorDownload.
Choose a delimiter preset or custom pair
The preset labels cover straight quotes, curly quotes, brackets, parentheses, backticks, and angle brackets. A custom pair joins the selected presets only when both Custom start and Custom end contain text.
He said "hello world" and called print("done").
The file is named [config.json].
With Double and Brackets enabled, the output is:
hello world
done
config.json
For markers such as ~~text~~, put ~~ in both custom fields. The matching is literal. The tool does not execute code or interpret regular expressions.
How Nesting policy handles nested marks
For asymmetric pairs such as brackets, Shortest (classic) pairs each opener with the next closer. Balanced (outermost) returns the outer span. Balanced (all levels) returns a complete span at each depth.
outer [inner] end
With Brackets, Shortest (classic) returns inner. The two balanced settings return the outer span, or both spans. Quotes and backticks pair with the next occurrence under every nesting setting because their opening and closing marks are the same.
What the output options change
Unique onlyremoves repeated extracted values after matching.Include delimiterskeeps the surrounding marks, such as[config.json].Skip empty matchesremoves empty inner values when the marks are excluded. An included pair such as[]remains a value.Include source positionappends the starting line and column to each output line.
The results table shows Match, Delimiter, Position, and Depth. Select Flag / report to list unmatched opening or closing marks in a separate table. Ignore leaves those marks out.
Use custom markers for template fields
For a template using {{ and }}, enter those values in Custom start and Custom end. The output contains the text between each completed pair. Keep Unique only selected when repeated fields should appear once.
Choose another extractor for other match types
Use Text Parsing & Data Extraction to browse related text jobs. Choose Extract Lines Containing for whole lines that contain words or a pattern. Use Custom Regex Extractor when a JavaScript regular expression defines the match. For Markdown link labels and destinations, use Extract Markdown Links.
Frequently asked questions
How do I extract text between quotes and brackets?
Enable Double, Single, Brackets, or another matching preset, then paste the source into Input text. Each completed match appears on its own output line.
How do I extract text between custom delimiters?
Enter the opening marker in Custom start and the closing marker in Custom end. The custom pair is used only when both fields are filled.
How does this delimiter extractor handle nested brackets?
Choose Shortest (classic), Balanced (outermost), or Balanced (all levels). The balanced settings apply to asymmetric delimiters such as brackets and parentheses.
Does Extract Text Between Delimiters evaluate regular expressions?
No. It matches delimiter strings literally and does not execute code or regular expressions. The extraction script reads the entered text in the browser and contains no request that sends that text to a server.
