How to extract ZIP codes from text
Paste a paragraph, log, or address list into the field labeled Input text and check the rows the page finds. Each row shows the match as ZIP-5 or ZIP+4, its source line, and nearby text. "Unique only" keeps the first occurrence of each exact value.
Find ZIP codes in text
Input text starts with sample text. Replace it with your own text, or choose Upload to read a text file.
- Paste your text into the field labeled Input text, or select Upload and choose a
.txt,.csv,.json, or.logfile. - Review the table under ZIP Code, Type, Line, and Context. Output text lists the current matches one per line.
- Change Unique only or ZIP+4 only to change the result set. The table, Output text, and count update with each change.
- Select Copy or Download after reviewing the filtered list. Download saves the list as
zip-codes.txt.
How ZIP+4 extraction filters matches
Check ZIP+4 only to keep entries with a hyphen and four-digit extension. Leave it clear to include ZIP-5 and ZIP+4 values. Unique only is checked when the page loads. It removes later exact repeats and keeps the first row's line and context.
Backup warehouse ZIP is 90210.
Reference ID 88220112345 should not match.
Return address ZIP+4: 60601-2345.
90210
60601-2345
The long reference number contributes no five-digit slice. The result count shows the displayed total, followed by separate ZIP-5 and ZIP+4 counts.
What the ZIP code results include
Each row keeps the raw match, labels it ZIP-5 or ZIP+4, records its source line, and shows a shortened context snippet. The snippet uses up to 25 characters on either side of the match. Whitespace inside it is collapsed.
The pattern must stand apart from adjacent digits and hyphens. A five-digit section inside a longer number is left out. A value joined to another hyphenated number is left out too. The matcher checks the shape only. It does not confirm assignment, current validity, or a city, state, or address match.
Address lists, logs, and mailing lists
A shipping coordinator can paste an address export, review the source lines, and copy the ZIP list into a separate worksheet. A support analyst can inspect log text for location codes while keeping the surrounding line available for checking.
A researcher working with scraped page text can use ZIP+4 only to isolate extended codes. For repeated mailing-list text, leave Unique only checked before downloading the displayed values.
Choose the right text extraction tool
Text Parsing & Data Extraction groups this ZIP code task with tools for other kinds of text values. Choose Address Extractor for US-style street addresses or PO boxes, Number Extractor for options such as decimals or negatives, and Phone Number Extractor for phone numbers and a chosen output format.
Pasted text and selected file content are read as text in the browser and processed by the page script. If filtering leaves no matches, the results panel stays hidden and the input controls remain available.
Frequently asked questions
How do I extract ZIP codes from a block of text?
Paste the block into Input text, then review the table and Output text. The page finds standalone ZIP-5 and ZIP+4-shaped runs and records their line and context.
Can I extract ZIP+4 codes only?
Yes. Check ZIP+4 only to remove ZIP-5 matches from the displayed results and Output text.
Why did a five-digit number inside a longer ID stay out?
The matcher rejects a candidate touching another digit or hyphen. It does not cut a five-digit result out of a longer digit sequence.
Does extracting ZIP codes verify that they are valid?
No. The page identifies numeric ZIP-5 and ZIP+4 shapes; it does not check a USPS database or match a code to an address, city, or state.
