Random String Generator

Generate random alphanumeric strings for API keys, tokens, unique IDs, and test data - all in your browser, nothing sent anywhere.

Character types

How to use the Random String Generator

Set Length and Count, then choose the character types for the output. The page puts one generated string on each line and uses the browser's Web Crypto API to create them. Changing a setting clears the current output before another generation starts.

  1. Set Length to the number of characters for each string.
  2. Set Count to the number of strings you want in the result.
  3. Choose the options under Character types to set the character pool.
  4. Turn Uppercase letters, Digits, Symbols, or Exclude ambiguous chars on or off.
  5. After the output appears, use Copy or Download.

What character types does the Random String Generator use?

The base pool uses lowercase letters. Uppercase letters and Digits start selected, while Symbols starts clear. Exclude ambiguous chars also starts selected, so the pool leaves out l, 1, I, O, and 0. Clear that option to allow those five characters.

  • Uppercase letters adds uppercase characters.
  • Digits adds numeric characters.
  • Symbols adds punctuation such as !@#$%^&*().
  • Clear Exclude ambiguous chars when the five look-alike characters should be included.
Length: 8
Count: 2
Uppercase letters: on
Digits: on
Symbols: off
Exclude ambiguous chars: on

How do Length and Count change the output?

Length accepts whole numbers from 1 to 512. Count accepts whole numbers from 1 to 1000. The output puts each string on its own line, and the status text reports how many strings it contains.

Any setting change removes the previous output before the page generates again. A Length or Count value outside its allowed range produces an error and leaves the result area empty. If you clear every character option, generation stops and shows Select at least one character type.

Where generated random strings are used

  • A developer preparing test data can set Count above one, then copy the separate lines into a fixture or seed file.
  • A QA reviewer checking an invite-code field can choose a short Length, keep uppercase letters and digits, and leave ambiguous characters out before copying the result.
  • A developer matching a required token shape can switch Symbols on or off and adjust the character mix before passing sample values to a form or parser.

When another text generator fits better

Open Text Generation Tools when you need a generator for names, identifiers, numbers, quotes, prompts, or placeholder text. Use Password Generator for random passwords or word-based passphrases with word count and separator settings.

Use UUID / GUID Generator for an RFC 4122 version 4 UUID with lowercase, uppercase, or braces formatting. Use Random Number Generator for an integer range, a die roll, or a coin flip instead of characters.

Frequently asked questions

How do I generate random strings in a batch?

Set Count to the number of strings you need, then let the output refresh. The result places one generated string on each line.

What does Exclude ambiguous chars remove?

Exclude ambiguous chars removes l, 1, I, O, and 0 from the character pool. Clear the option to allow them.

What is the maximum random string length?

The maximum Length is 512 characters, and the minimum is 1. Values outside that range produce an error and no result.

Can I copy or download the generated strings?

Yes. Use Copy to place the output on the clipboard or Download to save the strings as random-strings.txt.

Does the Random String Generator send output anywhere?

The page script creates generated strings locally and keeps them in the browser while you work. The output leaves the page only when you choose Copy or Download.
